Document A Religious ties to the land Read Genesis 12-6 below. What did the lord say to Abram? Why is this important? How did Abram show his thanks to the lord for his gift? What is the map to the left representative of? Why is this map relevant to the Jewish claim to Israel? Why do you believe Israel is referred to as the “Promised Land” of the Jews? How can you relate these two sources to the establishment of modern Israel by the Jews? Genesis 12-6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring[c] I will give this land.”So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Document B Anti-Semitism Describe what you see in the political cartoon. Who does the Long Arm represent in the cartoon? (think of the country as well) Why do you believe the teacher is being removed from the classroom? Think of deeper than just ethnicity. Title: Away with Him The long arm of the Ministry of Education pulls a Jewish teacher from his classroom.

What is the source of the above information? Document C Holocaust In accordance with Paragraph 45 of Order 138/41 of the Reich Commissioner for the Occupied Dutch Territories concerning public security, I order the following: Par 1: 1)A Jew who appears in public is obliged to wear a Jewish star. 2)For the implementation of this order a Jew is everyone who was defined as a Jew according to order no. 189/40 concerning the registration of enterprises. Children under the age of six are not included in this order. 3)The Jewish star is a star with six corners, painted in black on yellow cloth the size of the palm of the hand, inscribed with the word “Jew.” It has to be sewn firmly and visibly at the left side of the clothing at the height of the chest. 4)It is prohibited for Jews to wear official decorations, honorary decoration or other kinds of decorations. [...] Par. 3: This police order will be effective from the third day after its publication. The Hague, April 28, 1942  The General-Commissioner for Security and the Higher Commander of the SS and Police Signed: Raufer  Source: All Dutch evening newspapers, April 29, 1942. What is the source of the above information? Who is responsible for the police order over the occupied Dutch Territory? Who do the orders of the Reich Commissioner pertain to? Describe the laws that were put into effect. Why do you believe these laws were passed?

Document D Holocaust Describe what you see in each of the six pictures starting at the top left and moving clockwise. In the picture Kristallnact what can you infer happened in Germany on that day/night? Examine the picture of the Ghetto. What d the conditions seem to be like for the Jews? Is this a way in which you would like to live, why or why not? What is being shown in the picture of Auschwitz and what was it’s purpose? (use your prior knowledge). After analyzing each of the pictures, put yourself in the place of a Jew post holocaust. Would this sway your opinion about wanting to remain living in Europe, Why or Why not?

Document E Zionism "And what glory awaits those who fight unselfishly for the cause! Therefore I believe that a wondrous generation of Jews will spring into existence. The Maccabeans will rise again. Let me repeat once more my opening words: The Jews who wish for a State will have it. We shall live at last as free men on our own soil, and die peacefully in our own homes. The world will be freed by our liberty, enriched by our wealth, magnified by our greatness. And whatever we attempt there to accomplish for our own welfare, will react powerfully and beneficially for the good of humanity. " (The Jewish State, Chapter 6). Theodore Herzl's pamphlet Der Judenstaat, The Jewish State, was published in 1896.  Examine the picture, describe the man you see. Review the quotes, who do you believe him to be? According to the quote below right, what congress did he attend? From the quote to the left what can you infer was a topic of discussion at the congress? What is it that that Herzl would be laughed at for, and why do you believe he would be laughed at? What will everyone no in the years to come according to Herzl? Did this come to be? Read the above quote. What is “The Cause” in which Herzl is talking about? Why does having a free Jewish state seem so important to Herzl? Do you believe other Jews share his opinion, Why or Why not? What role do you believe Zionism played in helping to establish Israel?  “Were I to sum up the Basle Congress in a word- which I shall guard against pronouncing publicly- it would be this: ‘At Basle, I founded the Jewish State. If I said this out loud today, I would be answered by universal laughter. If not in 5 years, certainly in 50, everyone will know it.’”
