5E Lesson “Bioengineering Challenge” Lesson Created by Heather Clewett, Graduate Science Student Lesson Organization and Implementation by Nick Nemsgern

Bioengineering Challenge: Engagement What is bioengineering? Take 30 seconds to write on your notecard what you think this term means – include examples, definitions, drawings, ideas, etc.

Bioengineering Challenge: Engagement Video Clip: Watch the following video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM1E4ers3dw Take 30 seconds to add any additional ideas on your notecard with your neighbor.

Bioengineering Challenge: Engagement 

Bioengineering Challenge: Engagement This week we will be learning about the process and impact of bioengineering!!! Objectives: To gain understanding of bioengineering through practice, research and by interacting with related local professionals. Perform literature searches, write and peer review proposals of your own, and present your projects to the class. To use the engineering design process to create prosthetics and assistive devices, with the cornerstone element being the assembly and modification of a bionic hand.

Bioengineering Challenge: Exploration Today’s Task: Can you build a biomechanical finger that can pick up a Dixie cup?

Bioengineering Challenge: Exploration Building the Finger: The Details You have only 10-15 min!!! Materials are in your zip-lock bag. Successful completion of the task will reward you with more funding as we move into our next engineering challenge!! If you need help, there are instructions and examples – but using these will limit the funding you receive for your work!!! Be prepared to share you work with the class and discuss problems, setbacks, and experiences.

Bioengineering Challenge: Explanation Next 2 Classes: Presentation of Bioengineering Concepts and Engineering Design Process Guest Speaker: Hanger Clinic Prosthetist or Renown Hospital Occupational Therapist Literature Review: Bioengineering Articles – looking for reliable information from quality sources (common core application) Earn more funding for next challenge with each activity!!!

Bioengineering Challenge: Elaboration Bioengineering Challenge – Building a Hand Engineering Teams – design process and setting goals, member roles, deadlines, funding, etc. Class presentations of results, project feedback and summary of process

Bioengineering Challenge: Evaluation Formative assessment throughout unit to check for understanding (exit tickets, activity worksheets, etc.) Summative Assessment: Bioengineering a Hand Team Presentation & Building Packet – authentic assessment covering engineering design process and bioengineering principles.
