Connectivity requirements

TLS requirements All client connectivity is encrypted. We use third party CAs. All clients will validate certificates. OCSP/CRL endpoints are accessed over HTTP. You need to allow for this traffic.

Concurrent connections Modern Outlook versions will maintain at least three persistent connections for the primary mailbox. Additional connections for shared, delegated, etc.

Concurrent connections Browsers will open potentially dozens of connections for SharePoint Online, OWA, etc. Co-authoring will use more connections. A client using all services may consume >20 concurrent connections.

Bandwidth demands You can never have too much money, pizza, or bandwidth. But you can have enough of all three to get by. Outlook-calculate SharePoint Online-ever growing OneDrive for Business-control Skype for Business Online-calculate

Latency tolerances High latency is worse than low bandwidth. Cached mode makes high latency and low bandwidth much more tolerable. Most latency is caused by on-prem devices and decisions, or poor network architecture. Optimize your name resolution and Internet egress to get to our network as quickly as you can.

Egress rules Control egress at layer 7, not at 3. Permit all the required outbound ports (layer 4) to all the endpoints. Almost all outbound traffic will be over TCP 443. Skype for Business Online clients need the higher ports (TCP and UDP).

Bandwidth calculators Microsoft Ignite 2016 6/8/2018 4:30 PM Bandwidth calculators Client bandwidth calculators exist for both Outlook and Skype for Business clients. © 2016 Microsoft Corporation. Bandwidth calculators Microsoft Ignite 2016 6/8/2018 4:30 PM Bandwidth calculators Client bandwidth calculators do not exist for SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, et al. © 2016 Microsoft Corporation. Overestimate approach Microsoft Ignite 2016 6/8/2018 4:30 PM Overestimate approach Use your current bandwidth figures for Exchange. Consider how you will handle SMTP traffic Use your current bandwidth figures for SharePoint. Determine how much you will allow for OneDrive for Business and Skype for Business Online. Round up to the next random number. MSIT uses 400Kbps per user as a starting point. Most of my customers have seen an average increase of ~20%. © 2016 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Extrapolation from pilot Establish a pilot group that is a good representation of your user base. Determine bandwidth usage before migration. Determine increase after migration. Extrapolate linearly.

Things which will hurt performance

Latency hurts more than bandwidth Microsoft Ignite 2016 6/8/2018 4:30 PM Latency hurts more than bandwidth Things that increase latency decrease performance Spoke and hub Internet egress Bad DNS forwarding Proxying clients TLS inspection Consider Office 365 an extension of your infrastructure Get onto our network as close to your users & as soon as possible If you must proxy, monitor for performance Invest if you plan to do TLS inspection © 2016 Microsoft Corporation. Wrapping up

Wrapping it up Low latency is more important than high bandwidth. Microsoft Ignite 2016 6/8/2018 4:30 PM Wrapping it up Low latency is more important than high bandwidth. Connectivity requirements are documented. Read it. Calculators are helpful when good baselines exist. Overestimating increases is a valid approach. A pilot may be the most accurate way to go if you can afford the lead times. New services, new features, and new ways of doing things will drive the need for more bandwidth. © 2016 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
