Persuasive speech

Brainstorm Spend a few minutes writing down what you believe are the essentials for giving an effective speech. Share your ideas with the person next to you. Add anything you have missed. Consider the things that might make an ineffective speech. Do the same as above. Take note of those things that you know you struggle with. Write a strategy you can use to avoid making these mistakes.

The three key elements of any speech Verbal: what you say  Vocal: how you say it with your voice  Visual: everything the audience can see about you

But you are not giving any old speech… You are required to give a persuasive speech. What’s the difference between this, and giving a speech at a friend’s birthday?

How can we make a speech persuasive? Forming a strong contention/point of view, and coming up with at least three solid reasons (or supportive arguments) for why you have that opinion. Using persuasive devices/techniques. These will assist you in making your arguments. What are some persuasive devices you remember? What effects do these devices have on an audience?

Persuasive techniques you can use in your speech Personal anecdotes Inclusive language Exclusive language Colloquial language Repetition Hyperbole Fact and statistics Your task: come up with an example for each of these persuasive techniques on the topic: Humans are destroying the planet

Mini-persuasive speeches In pairs, choose from the following topics and take turns creating impromptu speeches arguing for or against the statements. Aim for about 1 minute per speech. You are trying to persuade your partner to agree with your point of view. Utilise the persuasive devices discussed in class, and try to maintain an awareness of tone of voice and body language. Topics: Puppy farms should be shut down Everyone should follow a vegetarian diet Athletes should have the right to use performance enhancing drugs Smoking should be make illegal Parents should be allowed to smack their children P.E. at school should be optional The drinking age should be raised to 21 Homework should be banned in schools
