Spain Builds an Empire August 15

Bell work Who was the first European to discover America? Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook (if you do not yet have your notebook, answer them on your own sheet of paper. Keep this sheet of paper. Who was the first European to discover America? What country did he sail for?

Today’s Lesson Standards SS. 8.A.2.1 Compare the Relationships among the British, French, Spanish, and Dutch in their struggle for colonization of North America. SS.8.A.2.5 Discuss the impact of colonial settlement on Native American populations Objectives I will be able to explain how Spain built their New World Empire by reading about Cortez and Pizarro I will be able to discuss the treatment of the Native American populations by learning about the encomienda system Essential Question What gave the Spanish the advantage over the Native Americans?

Notes Spanish conquistadors conquered the Aztec and Inca empires. Spanish explorers traveled through the borderlands of New Spain, claiming more land. Spanish settlers treated Native Americans very harshly, forcing them to work on plantations and in mines.

Notes Continued Conquistadors - soldiers who led military expeditions in the Americas. Hernan Cortez- conquered the Aztecs. Montezuma – ruler of the Aztecs Francisco Pizarro- conquered the Incas.

Notes Continued Plantations- large farms that grew just one kind of crop. Encomienda system gave Spanish settlers the right to tax local Native Americans or to make them work. Bartolomé de Las Casas- wanted to treat Native Americans with love, gentleness, and kindness.

Group activity Get into groups of four You will be given a reading assignment. Read this passage. Answer the questions. Discuss with your group. Have one individual share with the other group. Write down this information on the back of your paper.
