Vary sentence lengths The apple never falls far from the tree. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a perfect example for this metaphor. Throughout the novel Harper Lee demonstrates how a child is always influenced by their parent

Watch the run-ons! This quote shows how Atticus knows the consequences and impact not defending Tom Robinson would do, he want’s to show Scout and Jem that he isn’t gonna turn down a case just because Tom Robinson is black and would make people think badly of him.

What does the quote “show”? (Should support tS) Throughout the novel Atticus Finch is constantly instilling the quality of courage in his children. For example, in chapter 11 after Jem finished his work with Mrs. Dubose, Atticus explains why he had Jem work with her and says, “ ‘I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what’ ” (Lee 149). This portrays Atticus’ profound devotion to teaching his children the quality of courage. This also emphasizes Atticus’ belief that courage is a part of everyday life, and not exclusive to a battlefield.

Avoid 1st & 2nd person POV I believe that after raising Jem, he now knows how to comfort Scout and convince her that going to school is a good thing. (1st person) Atticus’s belief that most people are good when you get to know them teaches his children a general openness towards people. (2nd person)

Connect hook to 2nd sentence in introduction H. Jackson Brown Jr. one said, “life doesn’t come with an instruction book; that’s why we have fathers.” To Kill a Mockingbird is an amazing novel written by the wonderful Harper Lee and was first published in 1960.

Topic sentence transitions- USE Them!!! To Show Sequence: first, second, third, and so forth. A, B, C, and so forth. next, then, following this, at this time, now, at this point, after, afterward, subsequently, finally, consequently, previously, before this, simultaneously, concurrently, thus, therefore, hence, next, and then, soon To Add: and, again, and then, besides, equally important, finally, further, furthermore, nor, too, next, lastly, what's more, moreover, in addition, first (second, etc.) To Compare: whereas, but, yet, on the other hand, however, nevertheless, on the contrary, by comparison, where, compared to, up against, balanced against, vis a vis, but, although, conversely, meanwhile, after all, in contrast, although this may be true To Prove: because, for, since, for the same reason, obviously, evidently, furthermore, moreover, besides, indeed, in fact, in addition, in any case, that is

Verbs to describe function—Don’t overuse them! This suggests that Atticus is not only talking about the jury, but also Maycomb’s prejudice ways. This also evokes the idea that Maycomb’s unchanging views have cost innocent people their lives in the past.
