Back to School Night 2017-2018 Mrs. Huffman 1st Grade

A Message from Our School Board

About Mrs. Huffman Graduate of The University of Virginia Received Teacher Certification from James Madison University Tenth year in LCPS, ninth year in first grade

Attendance and After-School Plans Please make sure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and arrives on time each day. Your child must have a note in the morning in order to change after-school dismissal arrangements. If there are last minute (during the school day) changes to your child’s after-school transportation plans, please contact the office (DO NOT RELY ON E-MAIL!) If you plan to pick up your child early, please contact the office BEFORE 12:00 or send a note in the morning.

Lunch Please practice lunch numbers! Lunch can be purchased in the cafeteria or brought from home. Ice cream may be purchased on Fridays. If you plan to join your child for lunch, please send a note if an additional school lunch will be purchased and include lunch choice. Please check in at the office before proceeding to the cafeteria. Menu is online at LCPS.org; link on left side. Please send cash or check in an envelope labeled with name and number or pay online. Please discuss choices and monitor account!

Snacks We will have a mid-afternoon snack. It should be something that your child can open independently and eat in five minutes Healthy (No candy, please!) Neat, easy to eat snacks, please! Students may bring water bottles filled with water; sport/spill-proof tops ONLY. NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS!

Parties and Birthdays Three classroom parties Harvest, Friendship, End of the Year Birthdays Non-edible birthday items ONLY Donate a game or book to the class : ) ****If you are going to pass out invitations, you MUST pass them out to everyone.****

Health Office Visits Mrs. Kreitzman is available to students in the event of illness or injury that occur during the school day. Small cuts, runny noses, etc. will be taken care of in the classroom. Please refer to the handbook regarding medications and protocol for returning to school following an illness.

Classroom Citizenship Every child is expected to be Responsible, Respectful and Ready to Learn! Each child will begin the day with the opportunity to show excellent effort and cooperation. A child who is having a difficult day will be encouraged to make positive changes and reflect on behavior. Unsafe or exceedingly disruptive behavior will result in an office referral. Mrs. Huffman will communicate to parents about classroom behavior as needed.

Building Our Classroom Community Share “Way to Go Notes” to encourage the three Rs. Students have a chance to be the “mystery student.” We are always working to fill our Fuzzy Jar! Fine Dining

New this year: Readers’ Workshop Literacy Two diagnostic assessments during September DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) These assessments help us identify a starting point for reading instruction. New this year: Readers’ Workshop **We will discuss assessments during parent-teacher conferences in October and November.**

Homework begins mid-September Weekly reading log Read for 10-15 minutes each evening Discuss prompts Find and discuss weekly word study features Raz-Kids and Dreambox -- Later in the year, these programs will be used to practice concepts introduced in the classroom. --These require internet connection; a password will be provided.

BYOT Bring Your Own Technology Be sure to read the entire Acceptable Use Policy located on page 1 of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. This can be found on the LCPS district webpage under Quick Links. Green Student/Parent Technology Usage form is included in the parent packet and must be signed. First Grade classes will participate in BYOT a few times during the school year. Parents will be informed by the teacher when it is an appropriate time to bring technology for use in the classroom. We plan to use BYOT during portions of our One to the World activities. Students are welcome to bring Kindles/Reading Devices for independent reading after forms have been signed.
