What is the mission of the ESOL program? To teach students English so they will be successful in academic programs at school. To engage students in speaking English with their peers to develop social language. Tedra

Why is my child in ESOL? Your child speaks or is spoken to in a language other than American English may qualify them for ESOL testing.

How long will my child be in ESOL? It generally takes 5-7 years for students to develop their academic language skills. Exit from ESOL is based on results of WIDA-ACCESS census test that will be administered beginning in January 2017. Parents will receive a score report by the end of the school year.

How is the ESOL program implemented at Roscoe Nix ? Pull-out for first and second grade newcomers Plug-in for Pre-K, Kindergarten, First and Second grade students Small groups of focused instruction Co-Teaching in Kindergarten and First grade Tedra input picture slides

Reporting Progress Information will be sent home with your child at the end of each marking period for first and second graders. Angelin

ESOL news ESOL grades will be included on the students’ report card from kindergarten through second grade. ESOL students will receive a grade in listening, speaking, reading and writing. All ESOL students will take the WIDA-ACCESS test in January 2017. Students’ scores on this test will determine their ESOL levels for the following school year. Angelin

How you can help your child at home Talk to your child everyday (in your native language is great). Prepare a learning environment at home. Structure time for your child to read. Read to your child daily (in your native language is great) to build language structure, background knowledge and vocabulary. Check their take home folders EVERY DAY! If there are any questions regarding your child’s progress, contact his/her ESOL teacher.

Reading at home Take your child to the community library. They have books in many languages. RNES has RAZ kids accounts. This is a reading website that has books in English and Spanish. Your child’s teacher will give you login information.

High Frequency Words/Sight Words/Word Wall Words Commonly read and written words that can’t be sounded out that need to be memorized. Nafisa
