Review of Mass and Volume T. Trimpe 2008 http://sciencespot.net/

The amount of matter in an object Mass definition The amount of matter in an object

Units Grams

Tools Scale or balance

The amount of space an object takes up Volume definition The amount of space an object takes up

Units Solid Volume: cm3 Liquid Volume: mL 1 mL = 1 cm3

Tools Liquid Volume: graduated cylinder Regular solid volume: ruler Irregular solid volume: graduated cylinder

3 methods for measuring volume 1. Direct measurement- volume of liquids 2. L x W x H – volume of regular solids 3. Water displacement- volume of irregular solids

Kilogram Prototype Image - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram Mass kg g cg mg Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram and is represented by g. Since a gram is so small, we usually use kilograms, represented by kg. Mass is measured with a scale. Kilogram Prototype When measuring mass, find the mass by weighing the object on the digital scale. Or, find the mass by using the balance. kL cL mL L Volume Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system in the liter and is represented by L. When talking about solid volume we use cubic centimeters, represented by cm3 Metric Units 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 milliliter (mL) = 1 cm3 (or cc) = 1 gram* * When referring to water Liter Image: http://www.dmturner.org/Teacher/Pictures/liter.gif

Measuring Volume We use graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids through direct measurment. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. Measuring Solid Volume 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm We measure the volume of regular object with a ruler using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ http://resources.edb.gov.hk/~s1sci/R_S1Science/sp/en/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm We can measure the volume of irregular object with a graduated cylinder using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______ Click here for an online activity about volume. Choose Lessons  Volume & Displacement

Density Definition: a measure of how much matter is in a given space Units: liquids- g/mL solids- g/cm3 Tools: ruler and scale or graduated cylinder and scale Density = Mass divided by Volume

Density Density is a measure of how much matter is in a given space Tools: graduated cylinder and scale, or a ruler and scale. Units: liquids g/mL solids is g/cm3 Density = Mass Volume
