Scale Represents distances between two points on a map Gives distances in miles and kilometers Finding distance using scale When given, inches to miles/kilometers # of inches x however many miles 1 inch is 200 miles, so 3 inches = 600 miles (3 x 200 = 600) On a map Place a piece of paper so that the edge connects the two points Mark the location of each point on the paper w/ a line or dot. Compare the distance between the two dots w/ the maps line scale
Practicing Scale 1 inch is 150 miles 1 inch is 30 miles 2 inches = ________ 5 inches = ________ 1 inch is 30 miles 3 inches = ________ 9 inches = ________
Practicing Scale Line Scales A Graphic Scale depicts scale using a line, with separations marked by smaller intersecting lines, similar to a ruler. One side of the scale represents the distance on the map, while the other side represents the true distances of objects in real life. By measuring the distance between two objects on a map and then referring to the graphic scale, it is easy to calculate the actual distance between those same items.
Compass Rose A compass rose has arrows that point to all four principal directions. Your book uses a compass rose on its maps A directional indicator shows which directions are north, south, east and west. North is NOT ALWAYS at the top of a map. The way a map is drawn and the location of directions on that map depend on the perspective of the mapmaker.
