Sorcha Glenn Team Sorcha Social Action Hero

Sorcha Glenn Sorcha Glenn passed away on the 24th October 2014 aged 23 following a 13 month battle with cervical cancer. Brave and positive throughout her treatment and illness, Sorcha continued the whole time to raise awareness of cervical screening in young people. She hoped to remove age discrimination with smear tests with a long term goal to reduce the age of screening from 25 years old to 18 years old.

Team Sorcha Team Sorcha is In memory of Sorcha Glenn who passed 24/10/14 aged 23. Raise awareness of cervical screening & campaign to ensure no one is refused screening based on age. Early determination of cancer is important. Cancer does not discriminate on age.

The Campaign Sorcha's family believe young women should have the right to a smear if they ask for one. Since Sorcha's death, her story has captured the public's attention and her campaign to change the law has gathered momentum. Derry City Council is behind it, and an online petition has already reached the 14,000 mark. If Sorcha's family get to 100,000 signatures, what they believe should be smear on demand will at the very least be debated in the House of Commons.

Why? In 2011, registrations of cervical cancer in England were highest in women aged 25-29 years.  However, a more worrying development is the increase in the cervical cancer death rate in England:  Since the screening age was increased in 2004, the number of women aged 25-29 years dying from cervical cancer has almost doubled.  Early determination can help reduce the death rate.

Fundraising and events With a running total of £6803.03 raised so far by Team Sorcha, they get involved in a lot of events such as Sky Diving and more recently the “Legenderry Calendar 2016”.
