Period 5 Vocab

Atlantic Slave Trade Trade of African peoples from Western Africa to the Americas. Lasted from 16th century until the 19th century.

Triangular Trade A system of commerce that connected Africa, the New World colonies, and Europe.

Middle Passage The second stage of the system of triangular trade that saw the transportation of enslaved Africans from Africa to the Americas.

Asante Empire (Ashanti) An African empire that emerged along the Gold Coast. Was known for its gold and kola nut production and sale of slaves to Europeans. Lasted from the mid 17th to late 19th centuries.

Enlightenment Intellectual movement in the 18th century centered in France that applied the scientific method to the study of human society.

Thomas Hobbes An English philosopher that developed the social contract theory.

John Locke An English philosopher who is known for his work on the social contract theory. Formulates the theory of tabula rasa (blank slate).

Jean Jacques Rousseau A French political theorist whose work influenced the French Revolution.

English Civil War 1642–1651 A series of armed conflicts relating to the manner in which England would be ruled.

Seven Years War An armed conflict between Britain and France for global dominance.

American Revolution Political upheaval that took place between 1765 and 1783 during which colonists in the Thirteen American Colonies rejected the British monarchy and aristocracy.

French Revolution A period of political upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that saw the removal of the French monarchy.

Haitian Revolution An anti-slavery and anti-colonial insurrection that took place in the former French colony of Saint Domingue that lasted from 1791 until 1804.

Simon Bolivar A South American soldier who was instrumental in the continent's revolutions against the Spanish empire.

Jose de San Martin  Argentine general and the prime leader of the southern part of South America's successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire

Industrial Revolution the transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to the mid 19th century.

Imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.

Nationalism The belief that a people who share a common language, history, and culture should constitute an independent nation, free of foreign domination.

Spanish American War Conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States. With victory the US becomes a colonial power.

Qing Dynasty The last imperial dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912

Boxer Rebellion The Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists led an uprising in northern China against the spread of Western and Japanese influence there.

Russo-Japanese War Conflict between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea.
