START HEALTHY A fitness and nutrition program designed for families and caregivers that promotes health awareness and a healthy lifestyle. Created by Valrey Llewlaka Christian Merz Carol Rajala Steve Rich Jane Schunn

Start Healthy is a fitness and nutrition program that is designed to assist children in making healthy choices. According to the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), “about one quarter of 2-5 year olds and one-third of school age children are overweight or obese in the United States” ( FRAC, 2014). Kids Health reports that one out of three kids are overweight or obese (2014, par 1.).

MISSION STATEMENT Start Healthy is committed to assessing, monitoring, and providing community resources that encourage healthy lifestyles for children and the caregivers that support them. Licensed staff, such as nutritionists, physicians, and registered nurses, will provide a holistic approach to meet the needs of patients and caregivers in their journey to a healthier lifestyle.

PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Start Healthy Program is to empower children to achieve healthy lifestyles. This program takes a holistic approach that incorporates the cultural and spiritual needs of the child and caregivers. The program aims to maintain a safe environment for children to become excited about fitness and make healthy choices. We provide personalized assessments to assist our clients in developing achievable individual goals.

PHILOSOPHY We strongly encourage caregivers to become active in the child’s learning process. We provide activities that include fitness, nutrition, cooking, and skill building. We are committed to providing tools and education through the Start Healthy program that can be used throughout our client’s lifetime.

Start Healthy Goals & Objectives This program plans to address healthy lifestyle education, nutrition and physical activity with the goal of providing a healthier future for individual families.

Start Healthy Goals & Objectives Education and Resources Goal 1: Provide participants with education to identify appropriate resources and independently conduct research to find needed information. Objectives: Identify resources for recommended healthy food choices and activity. identify local resources for healthy food Identify local resources to increase activity.

Start Healthy Goals & Objectives Diet Goal: Provide participants with education and resources regarding healthy food choices. Objectives: Demonstrate understanding of the FDA food pyramid and appropriate serving sizes. Give examples of healthy snacks and how they have been incorporated Demonstrate cooking skills with limited sugar, fat, and healthy substitutions

Start Healthy Goals & Objectives Activity Goal: Provide participants with education and resources regarding the importance of exercise, as well as providing tools and resources that can be used to set and reach personal activity goals Objectives: Provide examples of benefits of exercise and regular physical activity. Demonstrate participation in regular physical activity as indicated by daily logs. identify progress through weight, blood pressure, and body mass index
