SMART BAGGAGE TRACKING SYSTEM IN AIRLINES SRI TULASI YADLAPALLI Under the Guidance of Dr. Paul Schragger Department of Computing Sciences, Villanova University, Villanova PA ABSTRACT TECHNOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE RESULTS Internet of Things has become a buzz word in today’s world. It is because of the machines that are being used and developed using IOT. It has wide applications in our day to day life. All most all of the companies in fortune 500 have their investments in IOT. Despite of its wide commercial use the main focus of the project is to reduce the customer’s headache and increase their satisfaction rate by introducing smart baggage tracking, which is beneficial to both airlines as well as customers. RFID reader and certain free technologies used are explained to underline the numerous possibilities that are available to a common man. In the first module, Raspberry Pi is connected to the RFID sensor which scans the RFID tags. In the second module, two Raspberry Pi’s are connected through User Data Protocol(UDP) and the data from one Raspberry Pi is displayed on the LCD screen which is connected to another Raspberry Pi. The results from RFID sensor are stored in the database. In the third module, MongoDB database cloud is used. Passengers information along with the id of the tag is present in the database. Connection is established to the database in such a way that data can be read from database and the record is updated based on the tag scanned. The project displays output depending on the bag Id scanned. If a bag with invalid RFID tag is scanned then we can a “WRONG BAGGAGE” message displayed on LCD along with Red LED and Buzzer. And if a bag with a valid RFID is scanned then an email notification is sent to the passenger. The out put results are shown here under: SERVICE SPECIFICATION RFID reader reads the RFID tags attached to bags and checks the bagID with the bagID’s in the database. If the ID matches with the data in the Mongodb cloud then green LED is glowed and an email notification is sent to the passenger. If the tag does not match with the data in the database then a Red LED is light up and a buzzer connected will start buzzing. A wrong baggage message is displayed on the LCD screen. The steps that occurs after a wrong baggage is tracked will alert the airlines that there is a bag on the conveyor belt which is boarding a wrong flight. A load cell connected to Arduino checks the weight of the bag. If the weight of the bag is more than the baggage rules specified by the airport then a red LED glows. The project that is developed is helpful to both airlines as well as passengers by reducing the baggage loss drastically. FUTURE WORK Project can be implemented in real world scenario using more number of RFID readers. More number of readers will increase the scope of the project by scanning tags at regular intervals, so that 99.9% of success rate can be seen. Adding GPS tracking sensor will help in tracing the exact location of the bag. Amazon web services will add beauty to the system by displaying the result in the form of webpage. System can also send notifications regarding the wait time to collect the baggage if the baggage is checked in. Additionally, the International Air Transport Association (IATA)—the trade association for 250 airlines worldwide—is mandating improved baggage handling systems by June 2018 through its Resolution 753, which depicts the huge scope of the project in future.
