The Problem of Spiritual Uncertainty INNER PEACE The Problem of Spiritual Uncertainty

Why fear and doubt creep in We compare ourselves to others. Preachers exacerbate our guilt and inadequacy by reminding us constantly about duties to God that we’re not doing and areas where we need to grow more. Some of the uncertainty and fear is rooted in a mistaken notion of salvation by works.

Is it possible to have confidence in anticipation of the judgment? “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. (John 10:27-28) For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21)

For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. (2 Timothy 1:12) Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you. (2 Peter 1:10-11)

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)

On what basis can a disciple feel hope instead of fear?

It is not on the basis of the fact that he/she will successfully know and do all God has said all the time. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

It is because the punishment that we deserve for our sins has already been paid by Jesus Christ. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. (Romans 8:31-34)

It is because as God’s child you walk in the light: but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We shall know by this that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before Him, in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (1 John 3:18-20)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) “So our love for him grows more and more, filling us with complete confidence for the day when he shall judge all men--for we realize that our life in this world is actually his life lived in us.” (1 Jn. 4:17, Phillips)

Living in hope rather than fear gives us vitality and energy for greater service. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. (1 Corinthians 15:10)

Living in legalistic fear brings discouragement and self-righteousness. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15)

“There is now therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1)
