Topic Sentences LAWS book and notebook

The most important sentence in a paragraph is the topic sentence The most important sentence in a paragraph is the topic sentence. It is called the topic sentence because it tells readers what the main idea of the paragraph is. In other words, it tells readers what they are going to read about.

A topic sentence has two parts: 1) a topic, which tells what the paragraph will be about, and 2) a controlling idea, which tells what the paragraph will say about the topic.

Basic Topic Sentence Examples Topic sentence 1: Dogs are animals. Topic sentence 2: Dogs are my favorite animals. Topic sentence 3: Dogs, a very common pet in the UK, are my favorite animals. What is the topic? What is the controlling idea?
