Topic and Concluding Sentences

A topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph is all about.

TOPIC AND MAIN POINT Every good topic sentence has two parts: 1. Topic

A topic is WHO the paragraph or story is about.

The main point is WHAT about the who.

Are better pets than dogs= what EXAMPLES Cats are better pets than dogs. Cat= who Are better pets than dogs= what

EXAMPLES Lebron James is an iconic basketball player. Lebron James= Who is an iconic basketball play= What

I am going to tell you about dogs. Dogs= Who What= ?? POOR EXAMPLE I am going to tell you about dogs. Dogs= Who What= ??

This is all about Panda Bears. Panda Bears= Who What=?? POOR EXAMPLE This is all about Panda Bears. Panda Bears= Who What=??

CONCLUDING SENTENCES A concluding sentence is the final sentence of your paragraph or paper. It reminds the reader what the whole paper was about. Basically, you restate your topic sentence.

EXAMPLES OF CONCLUDING SENTENCES In conclusion, cats reign over dogs in the pet department. That’s why Lebron James is probably the best to ever play the game. As you can see, people of this area and the animals need the zoo.

REVIEW Topic Sentence: Tells the reader what the story is all about. Has a topic and main point. Concluding Sentence: Restates your topic sentence. Reminds the readers the point of the story.
