ACTIVE reading strategies   You've got to be in it Passive   to win it!

                                   ACTIVE READING

active reading STRATEGIES A bunch of curious scientists wondered - "Hey, why is reading easy for some and hard for others?"    These scientists did their little experiments and observations and learned that there are six things that good readers seemed to do that helped them comprehend the text. "Eureeka!"  They had found an answer to their question!

What are these strategies? Inquiring minds want to know.   What are these strategies?  Inquiring minds want to know.

ASK    ASK QUESTIONS THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE READING! ASK QUESTIONS FROM DOK 2 AND 3 QUESTION STEMS. HOW WOULD YOU SUMMARIZE THIS PASSAGE? WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF…? WHAT WAS THE CHARACTER’S MOTIVE? WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF THESE ACTIONS?

CONNECT Find similarities between the text and other books your life COMPARE/ Classwork CONTRAST movies   TEXT TO TEXT TEXT TO SELF TEXT TO ….. "Oh, that's just like when..."   "I had an uncle like that, too.” “This reminds me of…”

TRACK DOWN Determine the important information- there is OFTEN a difference between what is interesting and what is important!! Track down the important details/main idea Fringe technique- use 4 skinny pieces of ‘fringe’ to mark the IMPORTANT info. You can move this if you change your mind Clarify

INFER + + = inference READ BETWEEN THE LINES DRAW CONCLUSIONS MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS

DRAW A PICTURE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU HAVE JUST READ Visualize picture it in your mind's eye; make a movie in your head DRAW A PICTURE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU HAVE JUST READ

**SYNTHESIZE THE INFORMATION EUREEKA!!!! THIS IS THE MOMENT WHEN IT ALL COMES TOGETHER AND YOU CAN CREATE SOMETHING NEW **SYNTHESIZE THE INFORMATION It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle. All of the pieces have to come together to make it complete and to be able to see the WHOLE PICTURE! It is like baking- you combine all of ingredients and they combine to make something new. Ex- a cupcake

Question: "How will I ever remember all of these strategies?"
