WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? HABITATS AND ANIMALS WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Our last lesson Photosynthesis The importance of plants and animals for humans What we use animals and plants for We re-cap what we talked about in the last session. Then say now we are going to take a closer look at plants and animals and why they are important for the environment/ ecosystem.

HABITATS WHAT ARE HABITATS? IT’S AN AREA WHERE PLANTS AND ANIMALS FIND FOOD, SHELTER AND MATES TO REPRODUCE We have talked about the different types of plants there are and what they do. Now we are going to have a look at habitats. There are different types of habitats can anyone think of any?

DIFFERENT PLANTS LIVE IN DIFFERENT HABITATS RAINFOREST Rainforests are warm and humid (have lots of moisture) so many plants and animals, live in rainforests because there are so many levels to the rainforest it can support lots of different animals. Because they can support lots of animals, make lots of oxygen, so many plants in one area so bind the soil together.

GRASSLANDS Binds the top layer of soil tightly and provides an open space for animals to find food, mates and when it rains a lot changes to a wetland area where lots of birds sometimes from the other side of the world to find food because the rain makes the insects leave the soil and come to the surface. LIKE A BUFFET

WETLANDS

MANGROVES Mangroves are found in bays next to the ocean so can live in salty water and provide a habitat for fish and land animals to eat & sleep. They protect the coastline from strong wind and waves

RIVERS, LAKES & WATERFALLS Are made up of fresh water which is constantly moving to provide water to different areas supporting fresh water animals and animals that live on the land. Transports nutrients around the island, drainage for rain water, water source for animals

BEACHES Buffer zone between the sea and stable land (beaches are constantly changing shape and size because the sand is not stable). Sand filters organic matter out and the Crabs living here eat this food. Small fish live in the bay away from bigger fish that might eat them. Casaurina tree

THE OCEAN At some point in their lives 1/3 of all marine fish spend part of their life at coral reefs. They support a massive food source FISH and also help to protect the land from strong currents. he open ocean is important because it connects to the whole world. It transports nutrition to different areas of the world and other marine animals.

WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU KNOW? We now know about the different types of plants and habitats the final part is animals. So what kind of animals do you know? So like plants, animals can be put into groups as well. MAMMALS/ REPTILES/ AMPHIBIANS/ FISH/ BIRDS/ INVERTEBRATES

MAMMALS WARM BLOODED HAVE HAIR OR FUR HAVE LIVE BABIES MAMMALS ARE……. EXAMPLES…….. WARM BLOODED HAVE HAIR OR FUR HAVE LIVE BABIES What makes a mammal a mammal? What’s the difference between monkeys and snakes?

Here are some mammals we have on the island

EAT OTHER ANIMALS TO STOP OVERGRAZING MAMMALS ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE……. REGULATE PLANT GROWTH EAT OTHER ANIMALS TO STOP OVERGRAZING Mammals are important for the environment because……. Can anything think why they might be important?

LAY SOFT SHELLED EGGS ON THE LAND REPTILES REPTILES ARE…….. EXAMPLES…….. COLD BLOODED DRY SCALEY SKIN LAY SOFT SHELLED EGGS ON THE LAND Why is a reptile a reptile?

REPTILES ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE…… REGULATE INSECT & RODENT POPULATIONS (PEST CONTROL) ARE A FOOD SOURCE FOR LARGER ANIMALS

HAVE FEATHERS, WINGS AND A BEAK BIRDS BIRDS ARE……. EXAMPLES……. WARM BLOODED HAVE FEATHERS, WINGS AND A BEAK USUALLY THEY CAN FLY

BIRDS ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE…….. THEY POLLINATE PLANTS ARE A FOOD SOURCE FOR LARGER ANIMALS REGULATE INSECT, REPTILE & SMALL MAMMAL POPULATIONS

LIMBLESS (NO ARMS OR LEGS) FISH FISH ARE…… EXAMPLES……. COLD BLOODED LIMBLESS (NO ARMS OR LEGS) HAVE FINS & GILL LIVE IN WATER

THEY ARE FOOD FOR MANY ANIMALS AND HUMANS FISH ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE…… THEY ARE FOOD FOR MANY ANIMALS AND HUMANS REGULATE OTHER ANIMAL AND PLANT POPULATIONS THEY KEEP HABITATS HEALTHY

AMPHIBIANS AMPHIBIANS ARE……. EXAMPLES……. COLD BLOODED HAVE GILLS AS BABIES & LIVE IN WATER AS ADULTS THEY HAVE LUNGS AND LIVE ON THE LAND

AMPHIBIANS ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE…… THEY ARE A BIG FOOD SOURCE FOR LOTS OF DIFFERENT ANIMALS THEY REGULATE INSECT POPULATIONS ***ESPECIALLY MOSQUITOES***

INVERTEBRATES INVERTEBRATES ARE ANIMALS THAT HAVE THEIR SKELETON ON THE OUTSIDE OF THEIR BODIES THERE ARE 4 TYPES OF INVERTEBRATE……. INSECTS SHELLED ANIMALS (SNAIL, SLUG, OYSTER) WORMS CORALS, SPONGES, JELLYFISH

INVERTBERATES ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE…… BIG FOOD SOURCE FOR LOTS OF DIFFERENT ANIMALS REGULATE INSECT POPULATIONS DECOMPOSE DEAD ANIMALS & PLANTS KEEP THE HABITAT HEALTHY

ECOSYSTEM PLANTS ANIMALS HABITATS NON LIVING THINGS – WIND, CURRENTS, TEMPERATURE, SUNLIGHT, WATER, AIR So now we have talked about plants animals and habitats, we know that sunlight, water and air are also important. All these things when put together in one area is called…….. An ECOSYSTEM and a healthy ecosystem is when all the parts of it are balanced and support each other without needing humans in interfere

Samloem Animal video After being so patient we are going to show you a video of some of the animals we have on the island living in their natural habitat.
