5 Types of Microscopes Simple Compound Stereoscopic Electron Digital

Simple Microscope Similar to a magnifying glass and has only one lense.

Compound Microscope – Lets light pass through an object and then through two or more lenses. Each lens magnifies the image.

Stereoscopic Microscope Gives a three dimensional view of an object. (Examples: insects and leaves)

Electron Microscope Uses a magnetic field to bend beams of electrons, instead of using lenses to bend beams of light. Magnifies very small things, like the insides of cells!

Digital Microscope Works like a compound microscope but is connected to a computer so you can see the image on the screen.

Using the Microscope Place the smallest objective lens over the hole in the stage. Place the slide on the stage and fasten with the clips Turn the coarse focus knob to make the objective lens as close to the stage as possible without touching the slide.  Look into the eyepiece lens Turn the fine focus knob until what you see is clear.

What happens as the power of magnification increases? We can see better details with higher powers of magnification, but we cannot see as much of the image.

Microscope Stations Start at the station that matches your group number. Take turns to do: Look at a slide under the microscope. Draw what you see. Look at the objects with the digital microscope. Draw what you see. While waiting, move to the Mystery Pictures tables and try to figure out each picture! Move to the next station when directed.

Mystery Pictures Stations Some tables have Mystery Pictures of objects that were taken with a microscope camera. Look at the photos with a partner. Try to identify what they are!
