What’s in the Iowa Locator? More than 4.5 million titles More than 15.8 million holdings 703 participating Iowa libraries 196,403 new titles added last year 923,143 holdings added last year
Why is it so messy? Mostly because of ghosts of decisions past Radical title merge Add all submitted records (not enforcing the guidelines)
Keep, Toss or Organize
Enforce Standards All records are checked against the MARC Record Standards Any record not meeting the standards is put into an exception list Library staff work through the exception list: Matching, merging Deleting Fixing
Total Database Replacement Libraries can choose to replace records in the Locator All old holdings are deleted All new and improved records are added
Title Merges State Library staff and others are working through long lists of titles Matching and merging
Batch Deletions Occasional Includes records for: magazines computers ILL phone numbers
Shiny New Record Routine New bibliographic records are created Used for CIP records SNR overlays existing incomplete records
Sub-standard Record Reporting Coming soon A pop-up form for reporting records Available from the bib record page After problem is submitted, the record will be replaced
Singletons Coming soon Lists of single records will be sorted out Added to the menu from SILO ILL Library staff would work on records Match, merge, delete
