Natural Resources
Natural Resources any material from the earth that can be used in some way by people.
Renewable can be replaced in time (Lifetime) 1. Water 2. Trees 3. Air (oxygen & carbon dioxide) What are two more renewable resources?
Nonrenewable cannot be replaced or can only be replaced very slowly (not in our lifetime).
Nonrenewable Mineral deposit – any rock that contains a significant amount of mineral. Ore – if the deposits contains enough mineral to mine and make a profit Fossils Fuels – hydrocarbons made from once living things. A. Coal (Virginia most important fossil fuel!) B. Oil C. Natural Gas
How can we conserve (save) natural resources? The 3 Rs of Conservation: 1. Reduce (use less) 2. Reuse ( reuse instead of throwing away) 3. Recycle (if possible)
What are some problems with fossils fuels? Acid rain – burning coal releases sulfur dioxide which mixes with rain to form sulfuric acid. Strip mining – damages habitats of animals and plants. Deep mining – hazardous! Smog – chemical fog formed when chemicals from car exhaust mixes with sunlight
What are some alternative energy sources? Nuclear fission –splitting atoms to release energy. Problem: Radioactive wastes! Must be cooled, so power plants don’t melt down! Fusion - combining small atoms to form larger ones (like in the sun). Problem: requires high temperatures. Solar energy Problem: can only be stored in small amounts; sun doesn’t always shine.
What are some alternative energy sources? Wind – caused by differential heating of the earth and air. Problem: blocked by mountains Plants – store energy in biomass. Geothermal energy – escaping steam from the earth can be used to generate electricity. Hydroelectric – using water to generate electricity. Problem: dams destroy habitats.
