Presentation transcript:

Climate in The Amazon Rainforest – Data Handling Expected Outcomes: To work collaboratively, preferably in pairs To input data into an Excel Spreadsheet To create a bar graph To label the graph correctly To answer questions and discuss findings from a graph Step 1: Class discussion on what they already know about the rainforest Ask children to write down as many words as you can think of to describe the Amazon rainforest from what you already know.Children to swap with the person next to you. Highlight the 3 adjectives you like the most. Have children feedback and discuss their chosen adjectives.

Climate in The Amazon Rainforest

Climate in The Amazon Rainforest Task 1: So what do you already know about the rainforest? Write down as many words as you can think of to describe the Amazon rainforest from what you already know. Swap with the person next to you. Highlight the 3 adjectives you like the most. Class to feedback and discuss their chosen adjectives.

Task 2: Look at the Bar Graph below. In pairs answer the following questions: Which month has the highest temperature? Which months have the highest rainfall? What is the temperature in December? What was the average amount of rainfall in February?

Task 3: Today you are going to create your own climate graph for the Amazon rainforest. Work in pairs. On your laptop or PC open Microsoft Excel put a title in the first cell in the table: Average Rainfall and Temperature in Manaus In your table below the Title type the data below into the Rows and Columns.   Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Rain fall (mm) 249 231 262 221 170 84 58 38 46 107 142 203 Temp (˚C) 28 27 29

Task 4: Create a Graph of your data. Watch a demo of creating a graph and then create your own. Answer the questions below: 1. Which was the wettest month in London Manaus? 2. Which was the driest month in Manaus London? 3. What is the highest average temperature recorded in Manaus? Other questions could be: 1. What is the Mode temperature. 2. Why is temperature so consistent? 3. Why is there so much rainfall?
