New Nationalism: Nationalism is on the Rise in the early 1800’s. Era of Growth & Disunion

Review of Economic growth in 1800’s South becomes a plantation economy. Cotton becomes the “king” because of the Cotton Gin- Slavery increases greatly Northeast/Middle States: Manufacturing (automated machinery with use of mill wheels) and trade explode. Canals are dug to stimulate trade. Ohio River: mixed economy farming and manufacturing

Manifest Destiny A belief that the United States would inevitably expand westward to the Pacific Ocean.

Adams-Onis Treaty A treaty worked out by John Quincy Adams (Secretary of State) and Luis Onis (Spain’s Foreign Minister)that saw Spain cede the Florida Territory to the US because the US assumed Spain’s debt to Americans. Sets the boundaries between the US and New Spain (Mexico).
