Notes – Greek Theater and Antigone

Greek Theater Began as a celebration in honor of Dionysos – the god of wine Took place in amphitheaters – outdoor The 1st annual festival started in 534 B.C. It was a competition

Kinds of Greek Plays Comedy – a play with a happy ending – It tends to be humorous, but does not require that. Tragedy – ends in multiple deaths Actors would wear masks that expressed different emotions.

Dramatic Aspects and Structure Chorus – a central part of Greek plays – The chorus sang between scenes and would sing praise to Dionysos prior to plays starting. The chorus was treated as an everyman or one of the people. Choragos – an actor in the chorus that would also be a part of the play; This actor would act as a middleman between the chorus and the main characters.

Dramatic Aspects and Structure Prologue – acts as the exposition of the play and introduces the background and conflict Odes – more songs that the chorus would sing between scenes Exodos – the final scene of a tragedy

Dramatic Aspects and Structure Tragic flaw – the largest flaw of a character that leads to his or her ultimate downfall. Based on traditional theater, this tragic flaw tends to be fated. Hubris – pride so strong that it blinds a person of his or her faults; this tends to be a tragic flaw

Antigone Background Written by Sophocles (one of the big 3 of Greek theater – also included Aeschylus and Euripides) Based on the myth of Oedipus Oedipus is Antigone’s father. Oedipus was king of Thebes (in Greece). Oedipus was raised by adoptive parents. Oedipus unknowingly kills his father. Oedipus unknowingly weds his mother, Iocast. His children are Polyneices, Eteocles, Antigone, and Ismene.
