Matter Chapter 1

Matter Anything that has a volume and mass Volume is the space that the object takes up Mass is the amount of matter in an object

Law of Conservation of Matter Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. It just changes form.

Weight and Gravity Weight is mass times the pull of gravity Metric unit for weight is newtons (N) Gravity- the force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses Gravity depends on two things Mass of the objects Distance between them

Put in order of increasing attraction to the earth Elephant Car Fly Squirrel Mr Rush Pin Why did you put them in this order?

Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in it’s motion Objects at rest remain at rest, objects in motion remain in motion unless a force acts upon the object Newton’s 1st law Objects with larger mass have more inertia

Put in order of increasing inertia Elephant Car Fly Squirrel Mr Rush Pin Why did you put them in this order?

Describing Matter chpt 1 section 2 Play 20 questions with the person sitting next to you

Activity On a piece of paper, write a description of something in the classroom. Make sure you use a lot of detail without actually giving away what you are describing Give your paper to someone else and have them draw your description exactly how you described it

Properties of Matter Matter can be described in terms of both physical and chemical properties

Physical Properties Can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter Ex. Color, mass, shape, odor, texture etc

Physical Property: Thermal Conductivity Ability to transfer thermal energy from one area to another. Poor conductor, so hot chocolate does not burn your hand!

Physical Property: State The physical form in which a substance exists, such as a solid, liquid, or gas.

Physical Property: Malleability Ability to be pounded into sheets

Physical Property: Ductility Ability to be drawn or pulled into a wire.

Physical Property: Solubility Ability to dissolve in another substance.

Physical Property: Density mass per unit volume

Chemical Properties Describe a substance based on its ability to change into a new substance with different properties Ex. Iron + Oxygen = Iron Oxide (aka rust)

Physical versus Chemical Change Identity of a substance does not change Can be reversed Chemical Identity of the substance changes Cannot be reversed
