Cisco Prime NAM Network Traffic Analysis Use Case

Objective Using the simplified workflow of the Cisco Prime™ Network Analysis Module (NAM) on the Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series NAM, the user can: View Top applications for a selected site and look more deeply into an application’s traffic for further host analysis. Using the Cisco Prime NAM Interactive Report and Historical Analysis feature, the user can: Trend on application traffic usage for a selected site. Trend on host traffic usage for a selected site. .

Use Case Flow Context Demonstration The director of IT needs an assessment of network capacity for planning and budgetary purposes. The network administrator is tasked with investigating existing and past traffic use in the network. The network administrator created different sites in Cisco Prime™ NAM to mimic the enterprise network during Cisco Prime NAM setup and installation. Cisco Prime NAM has been running in the network for the past 6 months collecting traffic data and is located at the headquarters (campus). One critical business application used in the company is Oracle Database. . Demonstration Monitor current traffic usage (the last 5 minutes): View top applications accessed in the data center (site) by users at the headquarters. Analyze Oracle Database traffic use and top clients that consume this application. Pick a client from the Top N host to analyze the use pattern and traffic consumption. Investigate conversations from the selected client, viewing details such as traffic to and from other hosts, applications, and traffic use. Highlight the workflow from Traffic Summary > Application Analysis > Host Analysis. Analyze past application use by performing Oracle Database trend analysis for the past 1 month, 1 week, and 1 day

Use Case Flow Demonstration Conclusion Look more deeply into the application use spike for the past 1 day by viewing detailed information for the top client. Analyze the top client’s application profile and host conversation. Analyze past client traffic use by performing trend analysis for the past 1 day and 1 week. Conclusion The network administrator has divided traffic use into two dimensions: application and host. The data points collected are the current and past traffic use for the business-critical application Oracle Database, top client traffic use, and traffic spikes.. This data helps organizations plan for future capacity needs and for a buffer for peak periods of network use.
