Testing Principles All tests should be traceable to customer requirements. Tests should be planned long before testing begin. The Pareto Principle applies to software testing. (80% of all errors uncovered during testing will likely be traceable to 20% of all program components). Testing should begin “in the small” and progress toward testing “in the large”. Testable Software Characteristics Operability—it operates cleanly (the better it works, the more efficiently it cab be tested) Observability—the results of each test case are readily observed (incorrect output is easily identified) Controllability—the degree to which testing can be automated and optimized (the better we can control the software, the more testing can automated and optimized) Decomposability—testing can be targeted (the software system is built from independent modules that can be tested independently) Simplicity—reduce complex architecture and logic to simplify tests (the software should exhibit functional simplicity, structural simplicity, and code simplicity). What is a “Good” Test? A good test has a high probability of finding an error A good test is not redundant. System Testing (SWE 13.6) A series of tests whose primary purpose is to fully exercise the computer based system. Such tests could be categorized as: Recovery testing : forcing the software and verifying the recovery is properly performed. Security testing : verifying the protection mechanisms built into a system will protect it from improper penetration. Stress testing: executing the system in a manner that demands resources in abnormal quantity, frequency, or volume. Performance testing: testing the run-time performance of software within the context of an integrated system.
