KWANGWARI MARIMIRA by METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT MANAGING DATA FROM SEISMIC NETWORKS 20-26 AUGUST 2017, SOUTH AFRICA,   SEISMIC OBSERVATION NETWORK IN ZIMBABWE   by KWANGWARI MARIMIRA METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

ZIMBABWE SEISMIC NETWORK The seismological Network in Zimbabwe started operating in 1959. Currently the Meteorological Services Department runs 4 seismic stations in Zimbabwe and these include Bulawayo (BUL), Chipinge (CHIPN), Karoi (KRI) and Matopos (MATP). Data is transmitted via satellite link and GSM for KRI and CHIP. . Data analysis is done at Goetz Observatory ,the National Data Centre

OPERATION TIMES OF SEISMIC STATIONS IN ZIMBABWE Number NAME OPERATION TIME LAT LONG ALT(M) 1 MATOPOS 2003 –to date 2025.55s 2829.96E 1215 2 BULAWAYO 2004 –to date 20 8.60s 2836.80E 1341 3 KAROI 1959 to 1993 2013 To Date 1649.76s 2936.88E 1343 4 CHIPINGE 2013-to date 2023.34S 3264.66E 978 5 MOUNT DARWIN 1959 to 1993 1646.80s 3135.00E 967 6 HARARE 2004-2007 7. DATA ANALYSIS IN ZIMBABWE SEISAN AND GEOTOOL for data analysis Seiscomp and Seisan software for Data Management. Seiscomp is allowing us to get more data from regional stations. Collaborating with CGS in station upgrade and data sharing. IMS stations providing more data AfricaArray/IRIS providing more data access.

PRODUCTS Goetz Observatory is the National Data Center (NDC) and archive for earthquake information. Earthquake reports (seismic maps). Earthquake bulleting and Catalogs . Contributes to global seismological research(ISC). Digital seismic waveform data. Earthquake hazard assessment. Public education(general populace, government agencies, students).

FUTURE PLANS The Department is on a drive to try resuscitate the old network. Zimbabwe is upgrading its seismological network to keep abreast with technological developments in earthquake monitoring Plans to resuscitate the other seismic stations in Zimbabwe are under way. Optimizing the operation and maintenance of the network. Monitor reservoir induced seismicity. Scientific collaboration with other scientific institutions(seismic hazard, microzonation studies)

ZIMBABWE SEISMIC NETWORK KEY New Stations (proposed) Old stations not operational (need to be upgraded) Operational stations HARARE HWANGE MUTARE CHP WEST NIC 6/9/2018

CHALLENGES FACED IN ZIMBABWE Data gaps (downtime is highly untenable ). Vandalism and theft Funding for station operations. Brain drain. Gaps in the downloaded waveforms Power cuts / generator Single station location Personnel
