TEMPLE LEARNING ACADEMY Developing Vision and Ethos

Aims Tonight To ‘kick off’ development of our vision and ethos statements by: Prompting thinking Recording key words and phrases Clarifying process

Education in Context “I confess that I have little idea how my grandchildren or their contemporaries will be earning their living 30 years from now, how society will be organised around them as more and more of life happens virtually, whether the nation state will still rule their lives or will have been replaced by city states and confederations, how they will measure success in their lives or how they will choose to live.” Charles Handy, The Second Curve, 2015

A Short Video Sir Ken Robinson

What We Know Now Parents/Carers in our community: Major concerns – the reality of life What do we want our children to get out of TLA

Expectations of Us “All boards, whether in the maintained or academy sector and no matter how many schools they are responsible for, have three core functions: 1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; 2. Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and 3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.” (From: Governance Handbook, DfE)

Vision – What is Expected? “The board should ensure that the school has a clear vision – which it may be helpful to articulate in a specific written vision statement. This should include ambitions for current and future pupils, as well as for the school’s relationship with other schools.” (From: Governance Handbook, DfE)

January 2015 Discussions Feedback included: Measurable objectives Communication and comprehensibility Working with others Ownership – starting with Governing Body – all stakeholders Using the vision, as a Governing Body Asking the right questions Testing by being there Strategic plan to implement vision Maintaining direction, regardless of external pressures

Vision - Workshop Read copies of the vision statement originally developed by the Trust.   In terms of a vision – what key words or phrases need to be preserved within our vision statement to remain true to that original, founders, vision? What other key words or phrases should we include to frame our vision statement? Given the desire to generate ownership, alongside our duty to engage with stakeholders (e.g. children/parents/carers), what process should we follow in arriving at a final vision statement?

Ethos – What is Expected? “The board should set and safeguard a school ethos of high expectations of everyone in the school community. This includes high expectations for the behaviour, progress and attainment of all pupils and for the conduct and professionalism of both staff and governors.” (From: Governance Handbook, DfE)

Ethos - Workshop What, if anything, does the original statement by the Trustees say about ethos that needs to be included in our statement? Consider the statements we promote around school to our pupils – should key words or phrases from these be included in our statement of ethos?   Are there any other key words or phrases we should include to frame our statement of ethos? Given the desire to generate ownership, alongside our duty to engage with stakeholders (e.g. children/parents/carers), what process should we follow in arriving at a final statement of ethos?

Thank You! Time for reflection What have we agreed?
