Presentation By: Nelson S. Jallah (Bsc, Msc Environmental Science) Topic: Natural Resource Management (NRM) NSJ, ESAL

Introduction Can anyone tell anything about Natural Resources? What is Natural Resource Management ESAL NSJ, ESAL

Definition of Natural Resource A natural resource is anything that people can use which comes from nature. People do not make natural resources, but gather them from the earth.  Examples of natural resources are air, water, wood, oil, wind, energy, iron and coal. NSJ, ESAL

Quotation “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed”. Mahatma Gandhi NSJ, ESAL

NSJ, ESAL

Renewable Resources A renewable resource is a resource which can be used repeatedly because it is replaced naturally. Renewable resources may include goods or commodities such as wood, paper and leather, because their sources are renewable. NSJ, ESAL

Non renewable resources A nonrenewable resource is a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption.  non-renewable resource (also called a finite resource) is a resource that does not renew itself at a sufficient rate for sustainable economic extraction in meaningful human time-frames. NSJ, ESAL

Natural Resource Management Natural resource management refers to the management of natural resources such as land, water, soil, plants and animals. Natural resource management deals with managing the way in which people and natural landscapes interact. Natural resource managers guide sustainable development to protect environmental assets. NSJ, ESAL

The Chain of Natural Resource Management NSJ, ESAL

Good Governance in Natural Resource Management Good governance is just not about processes and reform of systems, it is also about the integrity of those implementing and operating the governance system in natural resource management.  Transparency in natural resource governance is critical if pursued in its true intent. That is, the space must be created for citizens’ to have access to relevant information. NSJ, ESAL

Good Governance Continue Participation and accountability are critical elements in good natural resource governance; and along with transparency, they are necessary ingredients for solving nagging curses that come with resource exploitation. NSJ, ESAL

The Benefit of Good Governance in Managing natural resources When natural resources are managed well, citizens’ Confidence in their public officials increases. They feel the effects of revenues generated and development projects. The Entire communities are resurrected from the poverty. NSJ, ESAL

The New Central Bank of Liberia NSJ, ESAL

Jackson F. Doe Hospital NSJ, ESAL

Communities Role in Resource Management The communities are the custodian of the natural resources. They are responsible to protect the natural resources in the absent of the national government. They are to participate in all decision making that will result in the management of the resources. NSJ, ESAL

Threats on natural resources NSJ, ESAL

Policies of Natural Resource Management Does Liberia has good policies in the management of natural resources? Participants If Yes, what are the policies? If No, why? NSJ, ESAL

Answers Yes, we have policies in managing our resources The National Forest Reform Law of 2006 establishes a transparent framework for the usage, management and protection of forest resources that balance the commercial, community and conservation in Liberia. NSJ, ESAL

Answers continue The Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) was established in July 2009 on the basis of ensuring that all benefits due the Government and people of Liberia on account of the exploitation and/or extraction of the country’s minerals and other resources are: Verifiably paid or provided; Duly accounted for; and Prudently utilized for the benefits of all Liberians and on the basis of equity and sustainability. NSJ, ESAL

Conclusion Liberia is endowed with vast quantities of diamonds, gold, iron ore, tropical timbers and other natural resources which are held by and in the name of the Government of Liberia for the benefit of all Liberians. NSJ, ESAL

The End!! Thank You NSJ, ESAL
