Rapid population growth: Context and Specific Development challenge(s) Our Centre will be Addressing Decline in fish production coupled with high post-harvest losses (MW: 40%, Zambia and Uganda :30%) Rapid population growth: Result in low per capita consumption [MW (5.6), Zambia (7.2), Uganda (10), Mozambique (10.2) whilst SSA (8.4) Vs. 15 Kg recommended by FAO] Yet, fish is important: Nutrition (70% of animal protein), Economics Lilongwe University Of Agriculture And Natural Resources (LUANAR)

Context and Specific Development challenge(s) Our Centre will be Addressing The fisheries sector needs technologically skilled human resource to guide it. Therefore, AquaFish focuses on Increasing fish value chain gains for nutrition, food security and economic development Lilongwe University Of Agriculture And Natural Resources (LUANAR)

The AquaFish ACE Main Objective To foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the production of high skilled fit-for-purpose critical mass of agricultural scientists for improved aquaculture and fisheries management in order to enhance food, nutrition and economic security in Eastern and Southern Africa. Specific Objectives To train critical mass of MSc and PhD graduates who are competent to create innovations that will revolutionize the aquaculture and fisheries sector in Africa. 2.To enhance capacity of the center to attract national and regional students and train world class scientists that are relevant to industrial and development needs in the aquaculture and fisheries sector in Africa. 3.Improve innovations/technologies for increasing fish production, value addition and marketing, through partnerships with the private sector, academic and research institutions, and civil society organizations. 4.To develop entrepreneurial short courses and innovation packages that will attract funds to sustain the center of excellence and its partnership platforms. Bill was passed in Parliament in June 2016 Progress so far !!!!!!! Bill was passed in Parliament in June 2016 The Finance Agreement was signed between Malawi Government and World Bank on 5th August 2016 National Steering Committee was formed and held its 1st meeting on 23rd September, 2016. The Performance and Funding Agreement was signed between Ministry of Finance and AquaFish on 10th November, 2016. Date of Effectiveness was declared on 6th December, 2016 for AquaFish.
