Introduction to the Geography section of the Paraty trip In Paraty, you worked in one of three different groups, taking turns to visit the Historic Centre (Geography), taking a boat trip on Paraty Bay (Geografia), and walking down the Caminho do Ouro gold trail (Historia). For Geography you collected data whilst visiting the old town’s Centro Historico, to examine the impact of tourism on the town’s people, economy and environment. Now back at school, you will write up a project with the following components: Aim - To assess the impact of tourism on the town of Paraty, its people, economy and environment Hypothesis – Tourism has had a positive impact on the town of Paraty

Methodology – The data you collected in the town´s Historic Centre, to test the hypothesis. You each had a work booklet (that contained these instructions) and were in small groups to complete the following tasks: Land use map: Filling in a town centre map with information about the different land uses in Paraty’s Historic Centre. How much of this area is specifically dedicated to tourism-related businesses and attractions? Questionnaire: Talking to visitors, residents and business owners and asking them to answer some questions about how tourism affects them and their lives Environmental Quality Assessment: Making a decision on the quality of infrastructure, environment, facilities and overall appearance of the historic centre and justifying these decisions Tourism information: collecting leaflets and information from tour companies, restaurants and pousadas. What are the range of tourist attractions, activities and services on offer to visitors to the area (not just the town centre)?

Remember to thank the person at the end of the questionnaire.   Each group needed to complete 10-15 questionnaires with different people (tourists, locals, business-owners), asking them about their views of tourism in the area. Data Presentation Shade in a map of Paraty to show how the land and buildings of the Historic Centre are used. Use the land use maps you completed whilst you were there. What does this show about how tourism has affected Paraty? Use pie charts, bar graphs, tables etc. to show the results of your questionnaire. Analysis and Interpretation Use your map and graphs plus photos and other information collected to discuss and analyse the hypothesis: “Tourism has had a positive effect on the town of Paraty”. Use these questions to help you: How, and to what extent, is Paraty affected by tourism? Has tourism had a positive effect on Paraty – it´s people, economy, environment? Has tourism had a negative effect on Paraty – it´s people, economy, environment? How do you know this- what does the data tell you? What would Paraty be like without its tourist businesses? Conclusion AND Evaluation Do the findings fit the hypothesis? Summarise them.... How reliable was your data collection and presentation and therefore how reliable are your results? What could you do to make the data collection better next time? Can you think of any improvements to this study? What information do you need to make stronger conclusions next time?
