Has tourism had a positive impact on the town of Paraty? Paraty project Has tourism had a positive impact on the town of Paraty?

Introduction to the Geography section of the Paraty trip In Paraty, you worked in one of three different groups, taking turns to visit the Historic Centre (Geography), taking a boat trip on Paraty Bay (Geografia), and walking down the Caminho do Ouro gold trail (Historia). For Geography you collected data whilst visiting the old town’s Centro Historico, to examine the impact of tourism on the town’s people, economy and environment. Now back at school, you will write up a project with the following components: Aim - To assess the impact of tourism on the town of Paraty, its people, economy and environment Hypothesis – Tourism has had a positive impact on the town of Paraty

Methodology – The data you collected in the town´s Historic Centre, to test the hypothesis. You each had a work booklet (that contained these instructions) and were in small groups to complete the following tasks: Land use map: Filling in a town centre map with information about the different land uses in Paraty’s Historic Centre. How much of this area is specifically dedicated to tourism-related businesses and attractions? Questionnaire: Talking to visitors, residents and business owners and asking them to answer some questions about how tourism affects them and their lives Environmental Quality Assessment: Making a decision on the quality of infrastructure, environment, facilities and overall appearance of the historic centre and justifying these decisions Tourism information: collecting leaflets and information from tour companies, restaurants and pousadas. What are the range of tourist attractions, activities and services on offer to visitors to the area (not just the town centre)?

Start and end meeting point You will fill in this map with the land uses you find along the streets in your section of the town centre, using the letters below as symbols. You will draw up a neat and complete version as part of the follow-up work: R Restaurant, café, bar A Tourist accommodation: pousada, hotel, hostel S Souvenir shop, gallery, arts and crafts store M Public building of historic/tourist interest: Museum, church, Arts Centre etc. P Private home N Other non-tourism related land use Start and end meeting point

Remember to thank the person at the end of the questionnaire.   Each group needed to complete 10-15 questionnaires with different people (tourists, locals, business-owners), asking them about their views of tourism in the area. Politely introduce yourself as a school group from São Paulo and ask if they would be happy to answer a few questions about tourism. Remember to thank the person at the end of the questionnaire.

Introduction (including aim and hypothesis) Methodology Now back at school, you will complete a project with the following sections: Introduction (including aim and hypothesis) Methodology Data Presentation Data Analysis Conclusion and evaluation Introduction: this should be 2-5 pages and should include: A cover/title page A discussion of the issue to be studied – tourism in Paraty and its impacts A discussion of the fieldwork aim and hypothesis: to collect, present and analyse data looking at how Paraty (its people, economy, environment), have been affected by tourism A background history of Paraty (independent research needed), including its development and role as a port and its development and role as a tourism centre National and state-scale location maps (with title, scale and North arrow)

Data Presentation Shade in a map of Paraty to show how the land and buildings of the Historic Centre are used. Use the land use maps you completed whilst you were there. What does this show about how tourism has affected Paraty? Use pie charts, bar graphs, tables etc. to show the results of your questionnaire. What does this show about how tourism has affected Paraty? Repeat this process for the EQA Remember to annotate your charts and graphs to show what you have found. Add photographs to illustrate the points you are making. Add tourism pamphlets/adverts/brochure clippings

Analysis and Interpretation Use your map and graphs plus photos and other information collected to discuss and analyse the hypothesis: “Tourism has had a positive effect on the town of Paraty”. Use these questions to help you: How, and to what extent, is Paraty affected by tourism? Has tourism had a positive effect on Paraty – it´s people, economy, environment? Has tourism had a negative effect on Paraty – it´s people, economy, environment? How do you know this- what does the data tell you? What would Paraty be like without its tourist businesses? Conclusion AND Evaluation Do the findings fit the hypothesis? Summarise them.... How reliable was your data collection and presentation and therefore how reliable are your results? What could you do to make the data collection better next time? Can you think of any improvements to this study? What information do you need to make stronger conclusions next time?
