Talkin’ Trash

Hi Kids…It’s me, Oscar from Sesame Street Hi Kids…It’s me, Oscar from Sesame Street. I’m here to tell you about something important. Did you know your school, Jefferson Early Childhood Center, has an awesome trash/ recycling program? What’s that? No, you didn’t! Well you know me…I love trash so let me explain. What’s recycling you ask? Let me tell you all about it.

Recycling is when you take left over things and use them again to make new things. Even better than me telling you, I’ll have my good friend Peppa Pig explain. Peppa Pig Recycling Video Click to Watch /

So recycling is good for our planet because it makes less garbage! Wait a minute LESS GARBAGE?!?!… I bet you think that makes me really mad! Well actually it doesn’t! It doesn’t because there is one thing I love even more than trash… Do you know what that one thing is? That’s right, you guessed it! I love the earth even more than trash! Plus after we recycle there is still plenty of garbage left for me.

So now let’s learn about which things are trash and which things are recyclable! In order to do this I’m going to invite another good friend of mine to help us. You may have heard of a big movie star by the name of Wreck it Ralph. Yes, well I bet you didn’t know he has a brother! That’s right a brother!

Hi boys and girls. My name is Recycle it Randy and I’m Wreck it Ralph’s identical twin brother. Identical twin means we look exactly the same. I’m going to teach you about things that can be recycled and my buddy Oscar will teach you about what he knows best and that is… You guessed it, garbage!

I try to think of recyclable things belonging to 4 main groups: 1 I try to think of recyclable things belonging to 4 main groups: 1. paper 2. plastic 3. metal 4. glass

Lets take a closer look at these and see some examples.

Paper could include things like: Notebook paper Envelopes Newspapers Magazines Juice cartons Cardboard

Plastic recyclables would include things like: Milk containers Yogurt cups Fruit cups Ketchup bottles Syrup bottles

Metal recyclables include things like: Aluminum cans Aluminum trays Tin cans Foil

Glass recyclables would be things like: Baby food jars Glass bottles Jelly jars

The best news is that at Jefferson all these things can go into one big recycle bin or container.

There are a few things that CANNOT go into the recycle bin. Paper plates Food Old shoes Old clothes Styrofoam Plastic bag Plastic silverware Diapers.

These things are all garbage except… Paper plates Food Old shoes Old clothes Styrofoam Plastic bag Plastic silverware Diapers. These things are all garbage except… =

Plastic bags and Juice pouches Plastic bags and Juice pouches! Those go in 2 special containers and your teacher will take those to another place to be recycled!

Well I hope you enjoyed learning about the difference between recyclables and garbage. If you aren’t sure where something goes just ask your teacher and he/she will help. Also, your teacher has more games and fun activities that will help you learn more! Until we see each other again…. HAVE A TRASH-ER-RIFIC DAY!
