The Human Brain
The cerebrum Has 4 lobes Frontal Parietal Occipital temporal
The frontal lobe Planning Speech Smell The frontal lobe is responsible for many things the brain does Location: The front top part of the cerebrum. Body movement Concentration Planning Problem solving Speech Smell Personality
The parietal lobe Location: top center “head phones” area Touch Taste Body awareness
The occipital lobe Location: the back of the cerebrum Sight
The temporal lobe Location: under the ears, lower lobes Sound Long term memory Face recognition
Cerebellum Location: lowest two lobes in back, un-cracked almond shape Fine motor (small hand movements) Balance and coordination
Thalamus Location: inside the center of the limbic lobe (between the two halves of the cerebrum) The thalamus is The operator/switchboard of our brain. Processes sensory information that comes into our bodies (sight, hearing, touch and taste) goes to our Thalamus first and the Thalamus sends the information to the right parts of our brain to get processed (except for smell). - Also involved in consciousness and sleep.

Hippocampus Location: bottom of limbic system, right by the top of the brain stem The hippocampus is part of the limbic system, (the region that regulates emotions) Helps move things into long-term memory (school librarian, helps you to find information in your brain) Plays an important role in spatial navigation
Hypothalamus – Location right under the thalamus, in the limbic system hypothalamus is a section of the brain responsible for hormone production. The hormones produced by this area of the brain govern Body temperature Thirst Hunger Sleep Moods The release of other hormones in the body
Corpus Callosum- Location: between the left and right hemispheres of the cerebrum Helps to connect the left and right hemispheres of the cerebrum.
Pituitary Gland Creates hormones for sugar regulation, growth, the onset of puberty. http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/pituitary-gland
Brain stem Consists of the: Midbrain (see next slide, top of brainstem) pons which connects the cerebrum and the cerebellum. See BLUE part. Medulla oblongata – lowest section of brain stem that controls automatic functions (heartbeat and breathing)
Brainstem (Midbrain) – Location: very top part of the brainstem, pink on pict Coordinates information from your 5 senses and making small motions in response to that information. Helps control waking up, if removed we would be in a coma and never wake up!
Spinal Cord Location: runs from bottom of brainstem through back It sends messages between different parts of the body and the brain.
Limbic System Location: in the center of the brain between the two hemispheres of the cerebrum emotional control center – when we feel raw Emotions (fear, anger) Consists of 4 main parts: Thalamus Hypothalamus Hippocampus Amygdala (also the pituitary gland)
Amygdala Somewhat involved with memory. Handles basic emotions like fear, anger, and jealousy.
