AGENDA Review Homework Beowulf CLOZE passage 2. Study Guide Questions The Kenning Game

Correct answers from yesterday… “shadow of death” (35.74) The poet uses shadow of death to describe Grendel. Grendel comes like a “shadow,” “unseen” by the Danes he will eventually kill. He cannot be captured, for a shadow cannot be captured. Grendel hunts in the darkness, creating his shadow in the mead-hall, killing as many Danes as he can. (50 words)

Correct answers from yesterday… “shepherd of evil” (41.273) This kenning for Grendel uses some irony in that a shepherd usually suggests positive connotations. A shepherd watches over his flock, taking care of them, making sure the sheep have ample food and water and safe place to rest. Here, however, the poet shatters the image of careful caretaking and suggests that Grendel only “takes care” of evil, harboring and nurturing evil, caring for and ensuring the death and destruction of all that is good. (75 words)

Number your separate sheet of paper 1-15. Beowulf CLOZE Passage 2 Number your separate sheet of paper 1-15. Place all of your answers on the separate sheet of paper.

Beowulf CLOZE Passage 2 This is a reading comprehension assignment! You must be able to look for the subtle clues in the CLOZE passage— placement of commas, use of appositives, identification of parts of speech—in order to get these answers correct. The section you should study to find answers is on pages 36-39.

Reading Journal / Notes Every day we read Beowulf, you should have on your desk a notebook or notepaper onto which you will create notes about the reading. We will highlight certain things as we read; your job is to write these down and study them as we progress throughout the epic.

The Beowulf Study Guide In addition, after every reading, you should figure out and answer all of the questions from the study guide. This study guide helps you understand the poem as well as keep you accountable for the readings.

And we have coloring materials! Family Trees I found the paper! And we have coloring materials!

Work together to decipher and then make your own kennings. The Kenning Game Get into groups of four! Work together to decipher and then make your own kennings.

Friday’s Plan Tomorrow, all juniors need to take the end of the quarter final assessment. Students will have to do the following: 1. Read, annotate, and understand a non- fiction text. 2. Answer 10 multiple choice reading comprehension questions. 3. Analyze a visual text and make an argument evaluating how the visuals impact the non- fiction text.
