Radioisotope: an unstable isotope that spontaneously changes its nuclear structure and releases energy in the form of radiation. Isotopes Stable Radioisotopes.
Nuclear Power. A quick Review 1.Nuclear chemistry involves what part of an atom? The nucleus- they can change the element by altering the number of protons.
Fission and Fusion. Atomic Fission Nuclear fission occurs when a heavy nucleus such as U-235 splits into two smaller nuclei. Nuclear fission occurs.
Something (steam, water, wind) spins the turbine which makes the rotor (which is made of a magnet) spin. Something (steam, water, wind) spins the turbine.

Presentation transcript:

Radioactivity & Half-life The amount of time it takes for a radioactvity sample to decay to half its original mass is called half-life Practice. A sample of plutonium has a half-life of 20 years and activity level of 4 curies. After how many years will the activity level of this sample be 0.5 curie?

Activity Level Time Half-Lives

Practice. A sample of radioactive material has a half-life of 30 years and activity level of 10 curies. After how many years will the activity level of this sample be 1.25 curies?

Which country uses the most hydroelectric power? Why?

Hydrogen Fuel Cells: How is the hydrogen produced that is used for hydrogen fuel cells? ELECTROLYSIS – using electricity to drive a nonspontaneous reaction (in this case it produces hydrogen gas)

Nuclear Reactor

Electric Generator Converts mechanical energy (spinning turbine) into electrical energy
