Past Simple Form: Meaning: Adverbs of time: Regular verbs: base form + ending "ed" for all persons (jumped, talked). Irregular verbs: simple past form for all persons (ran, became, took). The verb BE: I/he/she/it was; we/you/they were. Meaning: to describe a completed activity that started in the past and ended in the past. Adverbs of time: yesterday; last week; last year; in 1954; an hour ago; a year ago; a long time ago.

Past Simple Use for: 1.Completed Action in the Past 2.A Series of Completed Actions 3.Past habits 4.Actions which happened at a specific time in the past

Past Simple Examples: 1.I saw a movie yesterday. Back 2.I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim. 3. I studied French when I was a child. 4. He arrived from the airport at 8:00. Back

Past Continuous Form: Meaning: Adverbs of time: WAS/WERE + present participle (I/he/she/it was doing; we/you/they were doing). Meaning: 1.The action (past continuous) was going on in the past when another action (simple past) happened. 2. The action was going on at a specific point of time in the past. Adverbs of time: while; when; at five o'clock yesterday.

Past Continuous Use for: 1.Interrupted Action in the Past 2.Specific Time as an Interruption 3.Parallel Actions 4.Background information in a story

Past Continuous Examples: Back 1.When the phone rang, she was writing a letter 2. At midnight, we were still driving through the desert. 3. I was studying while he was making dinner. 4.The wind was howling when we walked in the street Back

Past Perfect Continuous Form: HAD + BEEN + present participle for all persons (had been doing; had been looking). Meaning: 1.The action (past perfect continuous) lasted for some time before another action in the past happened (simple past). 2. The action lasted for some time before a specific point of time in the past. Adverbs of time: by the time; before; after; when (in the meaning "by the time"); + for two hours; for a long time.

Past Perfect Continuous Use for: 1.Duration Before Something in the Past 2. Action which lasted for some time in the past and whose result was visible in the past

Past Perfect Continuous Examples: 1.They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived. 2.Jason was tired because he had been jogging. Back
