Carbon Dioxide

Adding acid to carbonates Carbonates are compounds containing carbon and oxygen. When an acid is added to a carbonate the carbonate starts to fizz. A gas called carbon dioxide is produced. Carbon Dioxide is heavier than air so it stays in the test tube. We can not see it or smell it. Carbon Dioxide

Adding acid to carbonates Calcium Carbonate + Hydrochloric AcidCalcium Chloride+water+Carbon Dioxide CaCO3 + 2HCl  CaCl2 + H2O +CO2 The equation must be balanced Carbon Dioxide

Testing for carbon dioxide Proves Gas is Carbon Dioxide Gas Limewater Limewater turns milky/cloudy

Adding acid to carbonates Calcium Hydroxide(limewater)+Carbon Dioxide Calcium Carbonate + water Ca(OH)2 + CO2  CaCO3 + H2O The equation is balanced Gas Proves Gas is Carbon Dioxide Limewater Limewater turns milky/cloudy
