Aim: How do the Processes of Biomagnification & Eutrophication affect Ecosystems? DO NOW: Interpret the comic!

Biomagnification Higher level consumers accumulating larger quantities of poisonous or toxic substances Final consumers in a food chain are exposed to the highest concentration of toxins

Biomagnification Animation http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module02/BioconcentrationandBioaccumulation.htm

Example Toxins can be dumped into water ecosystems Toxins include lead, mercury, pesticides Producers are exposed to toxins Primary consumers eat plants and now contain a higher concentration of toxins in their bodies than the plants originally contained Secondary consumers eat primary consumers & now contain an even higher concentration of toxins in their bodies than primary consumers

Japan & Mercury Example Mercury = Toxin Mercury polluted water ecosystems in Japan Large fish, fished by fisherman, contained a high concentration of mercury Humans consumed these large fish & became sick with mercury poisoning

PCB’s

Eutrophication An accelerated aging process in a lake or pond, in which the body of water fills in with plant remains and is reduced in size Destroys aquatic ecosystems

Example Fertilizer (with nitrates) enters water ecosystem Algae grow excessively (algal bloom) Plants grow too Competition for sunlight & nutrients death Decomposers break down dead material & use up oxygen  more death Fish & other organisms start to die

Eutrophic Lake

Algal Bloom
