Today’s Topics Purpose of the Call for Programs SOC DNS review process and results Transfer credit in aviation degree programs Next steps Alignment of the bullets, larger font

Summer 2016 Call for Programs Reshape and expand the SOC Degree Network System Integrate new DNS member schools Develop new Degree Networks Strengthen targeted existing Degree Networks Focus on coordinating Degree Networks that have guaranteed course transferability among DNS member schools Focus on degrees programs that servicemembers are currently enrolled in and those with potential expansion and growth into emerging career fields Additional SOC DNS info: http://www.soc.aascu.org/degree-network-system Call for Programs disseminated from DoD to all DoD MOU partner institutions. DoD MOU signatory is a key criterion for consideration for DNS membership 54 new institution respondents, 19 current, and 6 prior members More than 300,000 servicemembers enroll in voluntary education programs while in military; once leave military service, continue their education funded by GI Bill education benefits.

Guaranteed Transfer (GT) Two-way transfer agreements SOC DNS Course Category Codes Organizing construct for courses Grouped by subject area Focused on major and major-related courses (M/MR) SOC Degree Networks Organizing construct for degrees Grouped by academic program Established through peer review SOC DNS Course Circulation Benefits for military student Mitigates loss of credit Provides roadmap and options for degree completion

SOC DNS Degree Program Review Process Address questions Collect degree information Academic Policies Course requirements Degree Program Submissions Create M/MR guidelines Develop course categories Initial sorting of courses Network framework (internal) Engage Subject Matter Experts M/MR guidelines Course categories Course placements Network framework Analyze feedback from SMEs Engage current and potential DNS member schools Finalize recommendations M/MR discussion

Aviation Studies-2 Network Results SOC DNS received 17 degree program submissions Degree program submissions were sorted in to three areas: Aviation Maintenance Aviation Management Aeronautics/Pilot Training M/MR Guidelines Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Aviation Circular (AC) 147-3B; 50 Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) subjects Similar to general business with specialized aviation knowledge; 11 subjects 14 CFR Parts 61, 91, and 141; heavily task based ~181 courses compared 38 subjects with some comparability Ranging from 2-6 potential courses per subject Some examples: Basic Electricity – 6 courses Pilot Ground – 5 courses Communication and Navigation Systems – 4 courses Weight and Balance – 3 courses Airframe Inspection – 2 courses 14 CFR parts specifics: Part 61 - Certification: Pilots, Flight Instructors, and Ground Instructors; Part 91 - General Operating and Flight Rules; Part 141 - Pilot Schools

Transfer Credit in Aviation How do you evaluate military credit at your institution? How do you evaluate peer institution’s courses for transfer? What factors are you reviewing? Clock versus credit hours? Does your institution require that certain measures are met prior to pursuing a degree? FAA Airframe & Powerplant license? FAA Pilot requirements? What else would you propose for inclusion in the M/MR guidelines? Are there Gen Ed courses that you might consider major/major-related? Physics? Maths? Thermodynamics?

Next Steps Transcribe and disseminate feedback from today’s webinar Links to playback and the slides from this webinar will be provided via a follow-up email Notes from transfer discussion will be available for webinar participants Collect additional feedback from current and potential DNS member schools Questionnaire sent to institutions, along with evaluation form for today’s webinar Opportunity for Aviation Studies-2 Advisory Group Move bullets to right or reduce picture size
