Timeline Money drove timeline Contract executed with Moodlerooms – August 25, 2011 Pilot classes in January 2012 34 faculty in pilot group 40 courses 57 captioned videos 238 non captioned videos Video work didn’t begin until September 12

Goals for the Project Course content that would be: Platform/Device independent Consistent format and presentation Browser independent Captioned Bandwidth – minimal bandwidth usage Ready for students on January 11, 2012

Reality and Limitations Staff Time Experience & Expertise Money Once we established our goals reality set in and we took a hard look at what we could do and what limitations we had. Staff When this project began this was a challenge that I needed to address. My department, Instructional Video Services, has only 6 people 2 video editors, 2 Audio Visual support technicians, a Video Broadcast Engineer and myself the Coordinator of the department. As you can see we have a very small department with few resources to spare. Instructional Video Services is responsible for providing Video Production and Audio Visual Support services for the OCCC . Time This project began at the beginning of the fall semester the busiest time of the very for my department. Experience and Expertise Much of the work to be done would involve technology and applications that we had little experience and expertise in. Money There was little funds expended to support this project.

External 1. Use a CDN Kaltura, Brightcove)– No cost projection with no budget allocated and no history of how many hours of use we would need. 2. YouTube channel – Copyright and Privacy concerns – Not public and searchable, but not secure requiring login, password or authentication. Both external solutions would still require some formatting of video, and require captions to be created and formatted internally. Internal 1. Already had licensed streaming server – just needed upgrade to current version 2. Already had professional captioning hardware and software – Link and CPC 3. Student Support Services already had a professional caption/transcriptionist

Testing Development Process Caption Methods Device Compatibility Media Development Caption Methods Device Compatibility Mike Media Development -Media development and access – HML player had no caption options at that time – future development, probably next version -Did not want to leave lesson page -Moodle has HTML editor on each page to insert code -Previous experience with JW Player – not to the level required here Captions -MAGPie – Free from National Center for Accessible Media @ WGBH Boston CPC CaptionMaker – already used, more options, 2nd station meant projects could be transferred. Tested various captioning methods – separate caption file (smi, srt, etc) vs. embedded captions – JW Player supports both ways with correct html. Script merged for iOS, .srt file for all others -Associated caption file with video would have meant more files, more work. Merged caption file into video -First attempts utilized command line scripts. had set from Ohio State Univ. worked for Ios 4. Not other devices. iOS 5 in middle of process. -CPC – would not merge captions with MP4 files -Handbrake – gave us a video encoder/caption merger that would play on all devices Tested with various devices and browsers

Lessons Learned Patience and fortitude conquer all things Mountains are for climbing Let someone throw you a life preserver Don’t give up; Don’t ever give up! Mike - Patience is required – iOS 5 , …..eventually ended up with simpler code, fewer steps in process, fewer files to manage Tim - HTML coding can be conquered – Neither knew anything about HTML and still don’t Mike - Help is available – Vendors (JW & Real), Colleagues (Web staff & instructors) and Forums Tim - Don’t give up – Mike’s response (not going to happen, better find budget, learn to be ok with YouTube)
