Intro: Hi My name is __________ I work with Be the Match/ Icla da Silva Foundation. Has anyone heard of Be the Match? Don’t gets us confused with the dating website The Match! Be the Match works in helping patients that suffer from blood cell cancer find a life saving donor. Does anyone know of a blood cell cancer? Leukemia is a common cancer that you may have heard off. How to be a match: Let’s say for example I had leukemia and my doctor says I am eligible of a marrow donor. I need to find someone that would be close to my DNA and ancestry. Who do you think would be the first people I would go too to get tested for a match? (students will response differently) Yes. Family!

What is the chance of matching within your family? The first to be tested in our family would be our siblings. If there is no match then other family members can get tested. But did you know that in our family we only have 20% possibility of a match? That’s a very low chance right?

Genetic Match The NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM® operates the Be The Match Registry®.

Donation Liquid Marrow Donation 10% *New* PBSC - Stem Cell Donation 90% There are two types of donation Liquid Marrow donation . Its’s a small surgery where you in anastisia from the wait down and a needle is inserted to the hip. You don’t life much pain just some soreness after. The second and most common donation is Blood cell donation. Has anyone donated blood before? Or seen someone done dialyses ? It’s a very similar procedure. The only difference is that 5 days prior you donate you take injection called Flimgrastic that stimulates your cells You have a needle on each arm blood comes out from one arm into the machine that separates the blood from cells . Cells are collected and blood returns to you. Side affects for this donation causes dizziness and weakness for a short time. Any questions?
