Colonial Economy

I. prosperity South Carolina was a prosperous colony because of the colony’s natural resources deer and pine forests Fertile land, mild climate, long growing season Low Country perfect for growing rice Charleston is a good port and SC has waterways for shipping

II. SC’s 1st Economy Initially…. What ended this trade? Europeans bought furs and deerskins from the Native Americans Europeans sold beads, trinkets, guns, alcohol to Native Americans What ended this trade? Settlers tried to enslave Native Americans.

II. SC’s 1st Economy Later, South Carolinians began to sell cattle and Native Americans to the Barbados Sent Naval Stores to Great Britain: items used for ship building Pitch and Tar used to waterproof ships

Acrostic Poem In a group of no more than FOUR, create an acrostic poem for South Carolina’s economy. Each letter should be either a word or phrase that describes the economy of colonial South Carolina. Each line must have at least 3 words. I suggest brainstorming words that start with each letter that could be used before you begin. Words that start with O: our, originally, only, once, on, overall S C E O N M Y

III. Agriculture Africans were sold as slaves. They knew how to plant rice and raise cattle. Rice became known as “Carolina Gold” Cash crop: crop grown to be sold Made the colony rich

IV. Agriculture Eliza Lucas planted indigo (used as a blue dye) in an attempt to make money and it becomes a new cash crop. British government offers a subsidy to get plantation owners to grow it Subsidy: government gives you money to help pay the costs to grow it

Summary frames: Fold a sheet of paper into quadrants (4). In each quadrant you will summarize what you learned today, using the format provided. Draw a picture in each square to represent what you have written. Describe: _____________ is a ____________ that _____________. Compare: _____________ is similar to ____________ because___________. Problem/solution: _____________ wanted ____________ so _____________. Cause and effect: _____________ happens because ____________.

IV. Political Factors Mercantilism: Mother country controlled trade so England exported more goods than they imported Export: send goods out of your country (sell) Import: bring goods into your country (buy) EXPORT 20,000 lbs of rice-- $100,000 IMPORT 3000 pieces of cloth- $30,000 TOTAL PROFIT: $70,000

Mercantilism Atlantic Ocean Europe Raw Materials Rice, Indigo, Cattle, Naval Stores, lumber, tobacco, wheat North America Manufactured Goods: Guns, cloth, furniture West Africa Middle Passage slaves

It was a win-win situation for Great Britain. V. Political Factors How did mercantilism allow Great Britain to become wealthy and powerful? South Carolina is a source for raw materials so GB doesn’t have to buy raw materials from anyone South Carolina is a market for finished goods so GB was exporting items to SC to make profit. It was a win-win situation for Great Britain.

Mercantilism Example As pig iron from America is necessary for British manufacturers to make steel, and British manufacturers are spending a great deal of money buying pig iron from foreign countries, the following action is being taken. By the authority of His Majesty and of Parliament, after June 24 , 1750 no factory in America will be permitted to manufacture pig iron or turn it into steel.

V. Political Factors Under mercantilism, rice and indigo could only be sold to Great Britain Helps Great Britain make money by then exporting the crops for more money Helps the colonists by guaranteeing a buyer

V. Political Factors Salutary Neglect: British government didn’t actually enforce their laws Allowed the colonies to develop their economies
