Aims Welcome to St Mary’s! An outline of the Curriculum that your child will be following in P5. to provide an overview of some of the topics and activities that your child will be participating in this year (Learning Plan)

General Information Morning 8 – 8.45 Breakfast Club 8.45am – Children can come into school playground 9.15 – Bell for beginning of classes After 9.15 am – marked late Afternoon Accompanied by teachers to school gate

General Information Dinners – Currently £2.60 per day, (in envelopes with child’s name and class on Friday only. Please do not enclose any other money for trips etc) Breakfast Club – £1 per morning Uniform Full uniform should be worn at all times. PE – Fridays(first term – wear full school P.E uniform) * Library Thursdays Swimming in Term 3 Any money relating to trips etc MUST be handed to class teacher in envelope with child’s name on front.

PDMU Newest learning area in Revised Curriculum Concentrates on developing children’s knowledge, attitudes, skills, relationships, behaviour, TSPC, emotional awareness, values and life skills. Living Learning Together Box

PDMU Self- esteem and Self- confidence: Recognise own abilities and value them. Feelings and Emotions: Recognise different feelings; understand why we need to manage them in a positive and safe way. Keeping Healthy and Safe: Healthy diets and lifestyle. Relationships with Family and Friends: working together as families and friends. Rights and Responsibilities: Children’s Rights and Social responsibility. Learning to live as a member of the community: Role as a member of the community and concern about the wider environment. 9

Linguistic Phonics Whole school programme Children should understand the relationship between their spoken language and the written word. Spellings given on Monday. Dictation test on Monday spellings will be held on the following week. A particular sound is explored each week. Important to work on spellings every night. Incidental work very effective.

Reading Shared Reading Book Banding Scheme Novels as reading books Develop comprehension skills and answering in full sentences. Library Books – change once a week Silent Reading Important to develop a child’s interest in reading. Reading activities in classroom. Preparation of reading at home Importance of reading a range of materials

Writing Variety of forms studied Procedural, Report, Narrative, Explanation. Poetry Punctuation – capital letters and full stops Handwriting Word processing

Maths Number Place Value to 99999 Addition and Subtraction within 1000 Multiplication and division Measures, Handling Data, Shape and Space, Problem Solving Lots of Practical Activity

Religion Grow in Love (worksheets sent home weekly) Beginning again Our Christian Community Parables and Miracles. Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter Saints Feast Days Assemblies Prayers

Homework Aim To consolidate and reinforce the learning skills and knowledge that has gone on in school. Spellings, Reading, Maths, English, Mathletics and other activities related to class work 30-45 mins Important to check and sign homework and homework diary to be signed every night.

Reporting to Parents/Assessment Parent/teacher meeting 2nd December. Meeting may be arranged with teacher by appointment. Literacy/Numeracy jotters sent home every few weeks to be checked and signed by parent. Assessment Weekly dictation tests. Weekly mental math tests.

Other information Child’s name on all school uniform. Reading diary to be signed when child completes his/her reading. Also check folders for notes. All money, notes, school related books to be kept in plastic folder. Encourage lots of supplementary reading of library books etc. Old trainers/gutties to be kept in school for Golden Mile.
