Illinois-Njala Sustainable & Innovative Global Healthcare Technologies (INSIGHT) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Jenny Amos

2013-2015 Partnership building: Njala University, Sierra Leone Program feature: Basic overview to provide context (program, fellowship or class? undergrad or grad?  global?  etc.) Building upon an existing agricultural-based partnership between Illinois and Njala University in Sierra Leone, a team of faculty and graduate students traveled to the School of Community Health Sciences (SCHS) in Bo to establish a new facet of the partnership focused on Global Health. The Illinois-Njala Sustainable & Innovative Global Healthcare Technologies (INSIGHT) program will lead Bioengineering seniors through identification, development, and implementation of a technology, medical training simulator, or biomedical device to address a clinical need. Part of is the instruction includes teaching students to think about how they are used and get integrated into existing technologies, which is a key aspect of success in developing countries. 2013-2015

Program Description Introductory course Capstone Course Example Topic: Fortification of Local Diet

INSIGHT Ideas Culture Illinois Njala Sustainable engineering Immersion class Sustainable engineering Food security Community design projects Novel feature: Describe a novel/ effective feature of your course/program. Note that you do not need to describe entire program, just one feature that makes it distinctive and effective.  Be sure to include measures of outcomes if possible.  You may also mention challenges overcome to enable success. 1-2 slides. With support from on-campus funding sources, the development of four new courses for the 2015-2016 school year is already underway, and will serve as the backbone for a global health scholars (GHS) certificate program offered through the Center for Global Studies. Courses in the program are an introductory course which is interdisciplinary, and utilizes a one-health perspective, subject specific courses in tropical epidemiology, food security in resource-limited settings, sustainable engineering practices and sustainable marketplaces followed by an interdisciplinary capstone design project. Each of these courses will be developed using a hybrid lecture/online module model, developed specifically to have particular relevance to real-world issues using Sierra Leone as a source for case studies, and made available to Njala students via Moodle. Partner through Y in local community Faculty and students exchange Online modules Service learning without travel! Tropical epidemiology Culture Njala Immersion class

Outcomes Develop basic cultural competencies being able to identify differences and understand consequences of unique religious beliefs, social norms and taboos, and regional diets Recognize the importance of different perspective and expertise for real-world problem-solving Analyze potential solution for cultural and sustainable impacts Provide any metrics you collect that indicate the success of your program or discuss other outcomes Measurement over time in certificate, not just one course or experience Perception that in order to improve intercultural competency, you have to travel, but our research question is to show if students can improve without travel Using IDI survey Intercultural Development Inventory Methodology unique – multipronged (Attitude, knowledge, & skill), survey methods, behavior in discussion posts, task oriented Capstone across continents with real project https://idiinventory.com/ intelligentmeasurement.net
