Planes, Telescope, System Testing Plans Planes, Telescope, System

Testing of Pixel Readout Single plane testing Test Program Testing of Pixel Readout Single plane testing - in laboratory during production - provides preliminary tuning 3-plane (telescope) testing - in test beam - plane tuning with MIPs - multi-plane timing/tracking (intrinsic) Full assembly testing - in laboratory (maybe test beam) Testing of Fast Out custom readout TN test stand / in situ Immediately Rutgers, UTK After March 23

Single Plane Testing Laboratory setup DAQ PCs 90 Sr Beta source Diamond + ROC attenuator + scintillator Pixel controller (FEC) Trigger 40Mhz + L1 40MHz Pixel Analog Out: Analog Hit Out Diamond+ROC self-trigger on - stopping electrons (mostly) - (or noise)

Single Plane Testing Hardware infrastructure a) Initially using copper input/output, TBM test board and USB FEC 20 MHz PCI fADC readout, Linux PC+ Cosmo; in laboratory Sr90 source and pixel calibration mode b) could be used w/o any other hardware in a test beam c) can be upgraded later with full or partial optical system, FED and/or FEC

Initial Single Plane Readout at Rutgers and UTK

Single Plane Readout Spectrum from stopping betas: deposit energy many times and less than minimum ionizing  low E cutoff Likely to have charge on >1 pixel due to multiple scattering Scope trace of Pixel A out: Stopping beta signature of working detector 1 Pix hit 2 Pix hit 3 Pix hit 4 Pix hit

Single Plane Testing What can be learned a) does sensor/ROC function? (plane production testing) b) bump bond yield c) noisy/dead pixels d) pixel-to-pixel uniformity of gain and efficiency e) pixel trimming techniques, threshold adjust, address levels; optimize other DACs f) get people trained; develop readout and analysis g) in a test beam: - can measure MIP charge distribution - combined with a tracker telescope: o measure spatial hit resolution o pixel hit efficiency

Single Plane Testing - Uniformity Box proportional to number of hits Row Column ~ <1% bad pixels

Telescope Testing Hardware infrastructure a) Initially using copper input/output, Sr90 and calibration, 20 MHz PCI fADC readout, TBM and FEC from plane testing, PLT HDI and test circuits. b) could be upgraded later with full or partial optical system, FED and/or FEC c) could be used w/o any other hardware in a test beam

Telescope Testing What can be learned a) does combined 3 ROC readout work, HDI design OK? b) are all 3 Fast Outs in time? (worry about ROC time-walk) c) can test Fast Out with 3-plane pixel calibration pulse d) Sr90, but only use on one plane at a time e) in a test beam (intrinsically): - can measure MIP charge distribution - pixel hit efficiency - can measure hit position resolution - can test F.O. coincidence efficiency

Test Schedule Proposal Test individual planes during production - assemble/test telescope in lab for test beam Test 3-plane telescope with HDI readout in test beam - MIP hadrons at CERN (starts mid April; also parasitically) could also use Zürich beam telescope in second phase - 1- 6 GeV electrons at DESY (March) use available EUDET beam telescope; interest; recently used to test energy loss in 500mm SC diamond (~1.08 x MIP). If 3 layer telescope not available start with single layer beam test at DESY; also test of irradiated detectors + readout
