Evaluation Arguments Day 13 of English 15-229

Reflection How did you invent categories and criteria for PE #5? Did you experience any challenges in composing it? If so, what? What audience were you envisioning for PE #5? If you were to change your audience to, say, young children, how would the criteria you developed change? Your criteria are warrants—assumptions you might share with your audience. So, for an audience unlike yourself, you would need to justify your criteria.

Arguments of Evaluation Proposal: What actions should be taken? Evaluation: What is its quality? Definition: What is its nature? Fact: Does it exist? Did it happen? Is it true?

Definition  Evaluation Formal definition: genus (class) and species Term Genus Species English 15 is a college course for writing. Genus + Species = Category Thing Category English 15 is a college course for writing Next step: What criteria pertain to this category? Category Criteria A college course for writing should….

Obituary Analysis What types of criteria of evaluation hold the obituary together? Why should we respect or admire the person? Skim the obituary. Figure out the “category” of the person—what was their profession or vocation? Re-read the obituary. Now focus on analyzing the criteria of evaluation. By what standards are they measured? Consult with your team to finalize your list of criteria.

Sample Topics Person Place Film Music Activity Marilyn Monroe: A Role Model For Teenagers Place Seville, Spain: A Gem Under the Sun Film Inglourious Basterds Music Background Music for Studying Activity Golf: The Most Difficult Sport

Researching Research what criteria are commonly used to evaluate subjects in your category by reading other evaluations E.g., Graphic Narratives: Read book reviews by various critics of graphic novels and nonfiction Research your subject from multiple perspectives Investigate both scholarly and popular sources Tomorrow: Library session! Come with questions.
