Year 5 Khao Yai Trip 2017

An Adventure in Khao Yai 13th – 17th November 2017 2 groups! Mon-Wed 5CH 5GA ½ 5CN Wed-Fri 5RW 5MC ½ 5CN

Objectives To recognise and identify different characteristics of a rainforest environment. 2. To compare it to an urban environment. 3. To explore the different lifecycles of plants and animals in Khao Yai. 4. To discuss the issues threatening Khao Yai National Park. 5. To develop team working skills and independence. 6. To have Fun!

Activity - St. Stephen’s Grounds Orienteering Problem Solving and Team Building Games – onsite at SIS Low ropes course Lifecycle Observations Disco Camp Fire and BBQ

Activity – Hiking Rainforest Trail Species discovery and sketching Sound map (listening for wildlife) Plant adaptations Species account: Fungi

Activity - Nong Pak Chi Grassland Characteristics of grassland habitat Looking for evidence of animals – trails and prints Environmental signs and symbols Connections to the rainforest

Activity - Lam Ta Korn Art around a river – Andy Goldsworthy. (Artist Study) Drawing macro invertebrates All about dragonflies Comparing the forest stream and the Chao Phraya near Shrewsbury

Evening Activities and Games

Health and Safety Rangers or staff visit each site before activity Pre-visit and knowledgeable staff Very high adult to child ratio (1:5) Trained Nurses x 2 – no self medication. All medicine to group leader Adults in constant contact with each other Mini-buses - Montri Follow stringent school policies regarding sun safety and thunder and lightning Follow stringent safeguarding and health and safety policies from St Stephens.

Kit List (on Firefly/Blog!) Depart school in House Shirts and return to school in PE Kit. Backpack for hiking Sports shoes (dry activity) Sports shoes (Can get wet in case of bad weather) Sandals or flip flops 2 x long trousers (not ¾ length that cannot be tucked into leech socks for hiking in the jungle) Personal medication labelled in English and sanitary items. Leech socks - The nine mall Rama 9, outdoor stores, online. Plea – please do not bring huge suitcases (There is no lift!)  It is very helpful if clothing is named!

Kit List 1 jersey / fleece / sweater 2 pairs of shorts – PE kit shorts 3 x T – shirts (Can include House Shirt and PE Shirt) 2 long sleeved shirts – jungle trek Plastic bags for dirty washing 3 x pairs of socks Pyjamas (long) One extra change of clothes in case of rainy weather 1 Light weight waterproof jacket House shirt to travel in and PE Kit to return in.

Kit List Underwear (lots) Sun – hat, Sunglasses, Sun – Cream Insect Repellent Water bottle – 1 litre capacity NAMED! Toilet Kit Towel (towels are NOT provided) Torch Pencil case Cards / small game – non- electrical Reading book Camera (optional but must be named) Hair Ties Disco clothes Spending money 500 Baht maximum

What not to bring Any parents! Valuable items such as mobile phones, electronic games and jewellery. Extra items not on the kit list Any snacks containing nuts and shrimp - allergies. Expensive clothes (jeans are not a good idea)

Further Information All medication to be handed to the group leader before departure clearly labelled in English and Thai. Nearer the time we will issue an emergency procedure and how to contact Mrs Hill/Mr Worthington. This is for emergencies only. You will not be able to speak to your child or child’s group leader as they will be busy in activities with very little free time.
