Preposition Usually identifies the direction or location. A word used to show a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. Usually identifies the direction or location. Always followed by an object, noun or pronoun.

COMMON PREPOSITIONS: about across behind beneath beside between by during for from in like of on over to under until with without

Prepositional Phrase Prepositions + anything modifying the object (usually an adjective) an Object (noun or pronoun)

Prepositional Phrase Always related to another word in the sentence Modifies the word in the same way as an adjective or adverb clause. Place the prepositional phrase close to the word it modifies, or it may cause confusion.

Object of the Preposition Noun or pronoun following the preposition. O.P. EX. Dogs help humans ( in many ways.)

Preposition vs. Adverb Adverb: My dog jumped up. Jumped where? Up Sometimes the word can be used as a preposition OR an adverb. If there is NO object, the word is an adverb. Adverb: My dog jumped up. Jumped where? Up Preposition: The cat climbed up the tree.

Adverb Phrase A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Tells: Where When How Why Modifying a verb: I stepped into a huge ball. Modifying an adjective: It was awesome in its beauty. Modifying an adverb: The doorknob turned easily for its age.
